The 2012 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Eszter Szűcs for the poster/PICO entitled:

Effect of the difference between surface and terrain models on gravity field related quantities (Szűcs, E.; Papp, G.)

Eszter Szűcs is a PhD student at the Technical University of Budapest. She is currently a research associate at the Geodetic and Geophysical Institute of the Research Centre for Astronomy and Earth Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Her research is focused on the determination of the geoid combining different kinds of terrestrial measurements, especially torsion balance data, in least squares collocation and spectral combination techniques. Digital terrain models are routinely involved in geoid modelling, however, where no model is available global high resolution surface models, like SRTM3, are usually applied. Her poster deals with how gravity related quantities are influenced if a surface model is used in gravity field modelling instead of a terrain model. The computations based on forward gravitational modelling show that for a forest clad test area in Hungary the difference between surface and terrain models has a negligible effect on geoid height, but the change in the investigated second derivatives is remarkable.
