CL Climate: Past, Present & Future

The 2014 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Tobias Weber for the poster/PICO entitled:

Is the Eocene’s climate affected by ocean tides? (Weber, T.; Thomas, M.)

Tobias Weber is a PhD student at GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences and Freie Universiät Berlin (Germany). He investigates the interaction between different climate components and their evolution over geological time scales. For this purpose, the climates of the Pliocene and Early Eocene have been simulated with a dynamically coupled global model system. In contrast to other climate studies the model setup considers ocean tides, thus, allowing interactions of tidal and circulation induced dynamics. The EGU 2014 poster presents a way to include tidal forcing into a coupled atmosphere-ocean model. It is shown that tidal residual currents strengthen ocean circulation in the Early Eocene and induce formerly not existing bottom currents. In addition, tidally increased vertical mixing lowers temperatures in the upper 2000m and increases temperatures below.
