Jon Ander Arrillaga
NP Nonlinear Processes in Geosciences
The 2015 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Jon Ander Arrillaga for the poster/PICO entitled:
An observational and numerical study of the sea breeze in the eastern Cantabrian coast (Spain) (Arrillaga, J. A.; Yagüe, C; Sastre, M.; Román-Cascón, C.)

I am a PhD student in the Department of Geophysics and Meteorology (Faculty of
Physics) at the Complutense University of Madrid, under the supervision of Prof.
Carlos Yagüe. My PhD research aims to make a study of mesoscale phenomena
developed under stable synoptic conditions and its influence on smallerscale
phenomena specially related to atmospheric turbulence and the mixing and diffusion
of physical properties in the lower atmosphere. Besides the observational analysis,
numerical simulations are performed with the Weather Research and Forecasting
(WRF) model, helping us delve into the investigation of turbulent processes that
happen in the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL). The EGU 2015 poster presents the
results obtained for my MSc thesis plus additional complementary experiments, in
which sea breezes were studied in the Basque coast (North of Spain) during summer
2013. Four sensitivity experiments were performed varying the PBL scheme and the
grid analysis nudging option, allowing us to study the turbulence and updrafts
generated with the arrival of the seabreeze
front.
