The 2016 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Kristin Burmeister for the poster/PICO entitled:

What caused the 2009 cold event in the Atlantic cold tongue region? (Burmeister, K.; Brandt, Peter; Lübbecke, J. F.)

I am a PhD student at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. My research focuses on the oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) in the eastern tropical North Atlantic and South Pacific. I am interested in the ventilation of the OMZs by lateral alternating zonal jets and how oxygen variability and trends in the OZMs are related to the large-scale ocean circulations and climate modes. The poster is a revision of an extreme cold event in the eastern equatorial Atlantic in 2009. For the first time, in situ measurements in combination with satellite and reanalysis products are used to investigate the causes of the 2009 cold event.
