The 2014 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Sören Thomsen for the poster/PICO entitled:

The formation of an anticyclonic mode water eddy within the Peru-Chile Undercurrent (Thomsen, S.; Kanzow, T.; Krahmann, G.; Dengler, M.; Krueger, M.)

Soeren Thomsen is a Ph.D. student at the University of Kiel, under the supervision of Torsten Kanzow, Anja Engel and Richard Greatbatch. His thesis focuses on the role of meso- and submesoscale dynamics for the near-coastal oxygen ventilation within oxygen minimum zones. His overall research interest is the turbulence nature of the ocean at scales ranging from mesoscale eddies, submesoscale fronts down to the microscale. The poster presented at the EGU General Assembly 2014 shows the formation of a mode water eddy within the Peru-Chile Undercurrent observed by a fleet of seven gliders. The impacts on the near-coastal salinity and oxygen distribution are discussed in detail based on the high-resolution three dimensional glider dataset.
