Postdoc Hydrology - GFZ Potsdam [2012.05.09]
The position will focus on linking of paleo-climatic proxy time series with hydrological time series in order to gain an understanding of long-term dynamics in hydrological storages and processes. Paleo-climatic proxy time series will include dendrochronological data as well as data from lake sediment cores. Local knowledge will be used in an regionalization effort, extending to regional long term dynamics in groundwater and lakes levels. Experimental investigations tob e carried out include the measurement of throughfall under different forest types with special emphasis on ist spatial and temporal variability and ist potential influence on groundwater recharge. Close cooperation with the GFZ Dendrochronology Team (Section 5.2) and with the PhD students working within the observatory is expected, as well as supporting the team`s efforts on gaining third party funding.

8 PhD positions International Leibniz Graduate School Aquatic boundaries and linkages in a changing environment (Aqualink) [2012.04.02]
Aqualink is an interdisciplinary doctoral training and research programme focusing on aquatic boundaries and linkages in a changing environment. Over a 3-year period, doctoral candidates will receive training that aims at facilitating completion of research leading to an original doctoral thesis and high-quality publications in the scientific literature. Two Leibniz institutes (Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, IGB; Leibniz Centre of Agricultural Landscape Research, ZALF) will cooperate with three international partners (University of Aberdeen, Scotland; Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, Eawag; University of Southern Denmark) to create a stimulating research environment, facilitate international mobility, and provide support structures and assistance, all aimed at promoting the candidates' skill set required for successful science. Some of the below advertised PhD studentships will be based at these institutions. Submission deadline: 29th April 2012.
Postdoctoral Research Assistant position in remote sensing and flood hydrology [2011.12.21]
As part of a three-year project funded by the Leverhulme Trust (http://www.leverhulme.ac.uk), you will undertake detailed research on the hydrodynamics and the hydrological functioning of the Congo basin freshwater system using remotely sensed data sets and modelling in order to address key water-related science questions. More specifically, the aim of this research project is to provide the first rigorous analysis of the hydrodynamics of the Congo river-floodplain system in order to answer fundamental science questions. This will be achieved using an innovative combination of remote sensing and hydrodynamic modelling techniques.
This is an excellent opportunity to be part of an innovative and multidisciplinary project that will considerably advance the science of flood hydrology of large river basins.
If successful, you may be appointed either on a fixed-term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of your previous relevant research experience. Three years’ appropriate and relevant experience at another higher education institution would normally lead to an appointment on an open-ended contract.
