28th IUGG Conference on Mathematical Geophysics

The 28th international conference on Mathematical Geophysics sponsored by the Committee on...

Understanding the evolution of our planet is becoming of increasing importance. The variable dynamics of the Earth's solid and fluid components testify to the complexity of non-linear relationships governing such coupled and multiphase systems. Mathematical models are a key tool for understanding these relationships, and represent the only mean for forecasting their evolution. The goal of this meeting is to present the state-of-the-art modelling capability to represent the different dynamics of Earth's components. Theoretical models of solid-earth dynamics, such as earthquake and volcanic processes, and of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, including climatic and biological evolutionary processes, are welcome. The focus will be on the capability of models to describe the complex evolution of Earth systems and quantify the sources of uncertainty in their dynamics, as well as to reproduce direct observations and laboratory experiments of the investigated processes.

Planned sessions:
Geophysical fluid dynamics
I - VolcanoesGeophysical fluid dynamics
II - Sub-surface and surface flowsGeophysical fluid dynamics
III - Atmosphere and ocean
Brittle deformation and computational seismology
Geodynamics and geomagnetism
Environmental systems and climate
Quantifying the uncertainty in Earth systems
Data assimilation and model validation
Computational geophysics: modern algorithms and applications

International Conference and Early Career Scientists School on Environmental Observations, Modeling...

The major focus of the Conference is on environment state and dynamics under Climate Change of Northern Eurasia, particularly Siberia. Being a region where climate variations are most pronounced and whose potential influences on the Earth System operation as a whole are of importance, this region has attracted recently attention of a number of research and funding organizations. To meet these challenges, a few years ago the Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) and its regional mega project Siberian Integrated Regional study (SIRS) were formed. Nowadays NEESPI is an interdisciplinary program of internationally supported Earth systems science research that addresses large-scale and long-term manifestations of climate and environmental change in the region. NEESPI strives to understand how the land ecosystems and continental water dynamics in Northern Eurasia interact with and alter the climate system, the biosphere, the atmosphere, and the hydrosphere of the Earth. Its overarching Science Question is: How do we develop our predictive capability of terrestrial ecosystems dynamics over Northern Eurasia for the 21st century to support global projections as well as to inform decision making and numerous practical applications in the region?

The purpose of the summer school is to revisit the concepts and ideas of a previous workshop held almost 10 years ago, about Global Change and Protected Areas (september 1999 in L'Aquila), to assess progress that has been made in our scientific ability to generate detailed climate projections at the regional scale that are of use to impact modelers, stakeholders and decision-makers working in the context of protected natural areas. The main objective of the school are thus to provide the students with an insight into climate and impacts modeling techniques, as well as environmental monitoring and decision-making strategies for regions that are not always easily accessible and rich in data. There will be ample opportunity to sample interdisciplinary approaches to complex environmental problems and to exchange ideas and questions between the lecturers and the students.
Lecturers will be given on the following topics:
Introduction and relevance to protected areas
• Global change and mountain regions
• Climate system and impacts
Observing and modeling techniques for protected areas
• Remote Sensing
• Climate Modeling
• Hydrological Modeling
• Extreme Events
Projected climate impacts
• Ecological systems
• Forests
• Aquatic systems
• Wildlife
cetemps.aquila.infn.it/issaos/

The final programme will be shaped with conveners aiding in terms of order of presenters and posters vs. orals. During this period, people will also be able to request 'free-of-charge' splinter rooms, should they so need them.

--------------------------------------
On behalf of the MPRG Division of EGU, we look forward to receiving your abstracts!!

Mioara Mandea
President of the Magnetism, Palaeomagnetism, Rock Physics & Geomaterials Division, EGU

Mesoscale modelling for air pollution applications workshop

An international workshop on Mesoscale modelling for air pollution applications - achievements and...

This international workshops aims to bring together leading groups involved in the development and application of mesoscale models for air pollution research. Much progress has been achieved over the past decade in areas such as parameterisation schemes, downscaling capabilities, online coupling of meteorological and air pollution models as well as in extending the range of applications to which the models can be applied. With the enhanced capabilities the complexity of the models and their use is also increasing. The need for user trainings, therefore, becomes more pressing and specialised training in the use of mesoscale models for air pollution problems becomes important.

Key international groups that have played a major role in furthering this research area include: COST 728 (Enhancing Mesoscale Meteorological Modelling Capabilities for Air Pollution and Dispersion Applications), WMO/GURME Programme on the GAW Urban Research Meteorology and Environment), MEGAPOLI (FP7 Project on Megacities), CITYZEN (FP7 project on Megacities), ACCENT (FP6 Network of Excellence), COST 602 (Towards a European Network on Chemical Weather Forecasting and Information Systems), COST 732 (Quality Assurance and Improvement of Micro-Scale Meteorological Models), AQMEII (Air Quality Model Evaluation International Initiative), FAIRMODE (Forum for AIR quality MODelling in Europe) and MACC (FP7 project on Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate). National groups such as MESOMAQ/MESO-NET (Mesoscale Modelling for Air Quality research) have also been instrumental in forwarding the uptake, coordination and development of mesoscale models.
www.cost728.org/FinalWorkshop.htm

5th International Nitrogen Conference

5th International Nitrogen Conference “Reactive Nitrogen Management for Sustainable Development -...

GAW-related Meetings in 2008

Global nitrogen cycle represents one of the most important nutrient cycles that sustain life on earth. Today, humans add 1.5 times more nitrogen than the natural terrestrial processes combined together through a combination of agriculture and fossil fuel use, and unduly influence the global nitrogen cycle. The consequences are profound for the health of both ecosystems and humans. The challenge presented by changing nitrogen cycle remains under appreciated in both policy and scientific circles, but already observed impacts of such changes on biodiversity, climate and human health provide compelling reasons to exploit more fully options for nitrogen management and policies.
The complex problems of reactive N management in a sustainable manner cannot be tackled individually, but rather the solutions must engage a large community that encompasses a broad spectrum of professionals. For N2010, the main theme is "Reactive Nitrogen Management for Sustainable Development: Science, Technology and Policy”. We are inviting not only participants concerned with particular aspects of N cycling, from all the disciplines of natural and applied sciences and engineering but also participants from the policy, development, and social communities. The N2010 meeting is the perfect venue to discuss these issues and consolidate the beneficial role of reactive nitrogen and to find common ground to answers and solutions to alleviate world hunger with minimal environmental harm. N2010 will endure in furtherance of agenda for better management of nitrogen across the globe started in the previous four International Nitrogen Conferences organised since 1998.
www.n2010.org

Recent WMO GHG Bulletin

This is the fifth in a series of WMO-GAW Annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletins. Each year, they report...

The latest analysis of observations from WMO's Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme shows that the globally averaged mixing ratios of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) have reached new highs in 2008 with CO2 at 385.2 ppm, CH4 at 1797 ppb and N2O at 321.8 ppb: higher than those in pre-industrial times (before 1750) by 38%, 157% and 19%, respectively. Atmospheric growth rates of CO2 and N2O in 2008 are consistent with recent years. The increase in atmospheric CH4 was 7 ppb from 2007 to 2008, similar to the increase of the year before. These are the largest increases since 1998. The NOAA Annual Greenhouse Gas Index (AGGI) shows that from 1990 to 2008 the radiative forcing by all long-lived greenhouse gases has increased by 26.2%. The combined radiative forcing by halocarbons is nearly double that of N2O. Some halocarbons are decreasing slowly as a result of emission reductions under the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer, whereas others are increasing rapidly.
www.wmo.int/pages/prog/arep/gaw/ghg/GHGbulletin.html
