Hubert H. Lamb

for his pioneering work on modern-day climate change research and his studies of the vagaries of climate and its impact on humanity

 
  Hubert Lamb received his BA in 1935, his MA in 1947 and his Sc.D. in 1982 from the University of Cambridge, UK. In 1981 he received the honorary degrees D.SC. and LL.D. from the Universities of East Anglia and Dundee, UK, respectively. Among his many other honours and prizes are the L.G. Groves Memorial Prize of the Meteorological Society, UK, the Murchison Award of the Royal Geographical Society, UK, and the Vega Medal of the Swedish Geographical Society.

Most of his scientific life Hubert Lamb spent at the Meteorological Office, UK, where he started as a Technical Officer by special merit promotion. His responsibilities were in the fields of Long Range Weather Forecasting, World Climatology and Climate Change. In this capacity he spent some years in the Antarctic and in Malta and North Africa and became a Member of the WMO Working Group on Climate Fluctuations and the First Director of the Climate Research unit, University of East Anglia, UK.

A remarkable fraction of his numerous publications are single-author papers.
