EGS Badge Award 1998
James S.G. McCulloch

in recognition of his generous services as Managing Editor and one of the founders of the new Society journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences

James S.G. McCulloch is internationally best known for his exceptional scientific contributions to hydrology, as former director of the highly respected Department for Civil Engineering of the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hydrology. He is now regarded as the mentor for research in hydrology.

With great enthusiasm and personal engagement. Professor McCulloch supported the introduction of the "new" hydrology, i.e., the hydrology viewed as an Earth System Science, into the EGS, and, besides the EGS Presidents for Hydrological Sciences, Enda O’Connell and Philip O’Kane, he was one of the founding fathers of the new Society’s journal Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS).

With unprecedented energy, skill and expertise, Professor McCulloch has made this journal to "exist" with three times more pages published in the first year than anticipated. The Society wishes to thank Professor McCulloch for his exceptional services as managing editor and production manager of HESS and present him the Badge Award 1998.
