The University of Manitoba invites applications for two (2) Canada Research Chairs (CRC) –Tier 2: one in oil spill science and one in sea ice modelling. Both will be tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Outstanding applicants with internationally recognized expertise in the broad fields of oil spill science (e.g., fate, effects, mitigation, or detection of oil or other transportation-related contaminant spills) and sea ice modelling (e.g., coupled ocean-sea ice-atmosphere modelling for both dynamic and thermodynamic modelling of sea ice) are encouraged to apply.
The selected candidates will be nominated by the University of Manitoba to apply for the Government of Canada’s prestigious CRC – Tier 2 program. Appointment with the University of Manitoba is conditional upon the successful award of a CRC-Tier 2 to the candidates. The successful candidates will be expected to play a major role in the Genome Canada project GENICE (https://www.genomecanada.ca/en/genice-microbial-genomics-oil-spill- preparedness-canadas-arctic-marine-environment), Churchill Marine Observatory (CMO; http://umanitoba.ca/ceos/research/CMO.html), and other collaborative Arctic marine programs at the University of Manitoba.
The position start date will be November 1, 2018, or as soon thereafter as possible. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
In accordance with the CRC -Tier 2 criteria, the candidates must be emerging research innovators, have a Ph.D., a proven success in obtaining external funding and training highly qualified personnel (HQP), and be nationally recognized as an emerging leader in research and interdisciplinary scholarship. The successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain a vigorous and independently funded research program that will be highly collaborative and involve local, national, and international partners. The successful candidates will become members of the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS; http://www.umanitoba.ca/ceos/) in the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth and Resources. CEOS is a focal point of Arctic System Science and Climate Change, which is a ‘Signature Area’ of research at the University of Manitoba (http://umanitoba.ca/research/media/Strategic_Research_Plan.pdf). With more than 125 researchers, students and staff, including one Canada Excellence Research Chair and two existing CRCs (both Tier 1), CEOS is one of the most influential Arctic research groups in the world. CEOS’ research is supported by a purpose-built Nellie Cournoyea Arctic Research Facility; laboratories for environmental and material sciences and applied electromagnetics; the Sea-ice Environmental Research Facility (SERF); the CMO; the CCGS Amundsen icebreaker; and numerous field stations across the Arctic. The Arctic Science Partnership (http://asp-net.org) between CEOS, the Arctic Research Centre at Aarhus University (Denmark), and the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources provides added opportunity for networking.
