The structuring of the School consists of Geology, Geography and environmental management and Town and Regional Planning providing a unique suite of disciplines to form the basis for comprehensive multidisciplinary training and research to equip students in becoming well rounded environmental scientists.

Job description


  • Teaching and learning:
    o Lecturing of under- and postgraduate geology modules
    o Preparation of material and instrumentation for practical instruction
    o Presentation of practical contact sessions
    o Consultation with students
    o Compilation and marking of tests, assignments and examination papers
  • Geology and environmental geology focused research:
    o Research and publication of results
    o Participation in postgraduate program including supervision for Hons, MSc and PhD students
    o Acquiring research projects and funds
  • General administrative duties
    Minimum requirements:
  • PhD Geology
  • Experience in teaching-learning on under- and postgraduate levels at a tertiary institution
    o Undergraduate: two or more of the following: structural geology, economic geology, geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology
    o Postgraduate: Environmental geology and mineralogy, environmental geochemistry, environmental geophysics
  • Experience in the use of appropriate laboratory and field instrumentation
  • Experience in supervision of Hons, MSc and PhD level at a tertiary institution
  • Proven record of research in the form of publications in ISI journals
  • Proven record of acquiring research projects and funds
  • SACNASP registration
  • NRF rating or the potential to obtain
    Other competency requirements:
  • Computer literate: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), E-mail and Internet
  • Effective time management skills with regard to the above-mentioned responsibilities
  • Project management skills
  • Communication: verbal and written proficiency in Afrikaans and/or English
  • Possess good human relations, as well as a customer service attitude
  • The ability to handle student inquiries
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • The ability to work in a multicultural environment
