PhD Position in cyclostratigraphy and Sedimentology
Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique grant at Liege University
Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Palaeontology (SSP)
The Sedimentary Petrology Lab of the University of Liège (Belgium) is inviting applications for a PhD position, with funding guaranteed for 4 years, in the field of cyclostratigraphy and sedimentology.
The project will focus on different Silurian sedimentary records and will involve substantial field and laboratory based work, including magnetic, XRF and carbon isotope measurements. These results will then be used for cyclostratigraphy to build high resolution time scales. The work will also involve modelling, with a focus on paleoclimate and on the development of anoxia during the Silurian.
The project will require numerous field campaigns, as well as collaborations with various institutions, providing the opportunities also for stay(s) abroad in one of these institutions (e.g. University of California at Riverside, University of Copenhagen or University of Bremen).
The applicant should have a Master (or equivalent) degree in Earth Sciences or in Sciences. Highly motivated applicants with an interest or experience in any of the mentioned topic (cyclostratigraphy, anoxia development, paleoclimatology or paleoceanography) are particularly encouraged to apply. Experience or willingness to work with R or Matlab will also be appreciated. Good oral and written proficiency in English is essential. French-speaking skills are non-compulsory.
Apply to this job no later than March 1st 2019 (Start date is negotiable between Feb. 1st and July 1st 2019) by sending in a single pdf your CV, a letter of motivation (max 2 pages, outlining your background, expertise, interest in the field/project, brief statement of research experiences/career goals), the name of 2 potential professional referees and a copy of your Master project to email@example.com. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org for further information. Selected candidates will be interviewed by skype or invited in Liege.
