Job description

Applications from all nationalities are invited for full-time tenure-track faculty positions in Middle East Technical University, Institute of Marine Sciences (METU-IMS). METU-IMS is the leading international marine science institute in Turkey with a 100% English education and research. All METU-IMS faculty engage in teaching, research and service towards the overall goal of sustainable of management of marine and aquatic ecosystems based on excellent science. METU-IMS particularly seeks collaborative, multidisciplinary and adaptive candidates to join its young and energetic group of natural scientists located in the seashore Erdemli/Mersin campus of METU.

Faculty search involves all areas of marine and aquatic sciences, but priority will be given to following areas:

Marine geology and paleoceanography; focusing on marine and aquatic sediment archives for a quantitative reconstruction of the history of environmental changes in the region
Physical oceanography with a strong emphasis on an empirical, seagoing field research focus that uses state of the art observational tools
Science for blue economy development in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions: ranging from quantitative research on marine products biotechnology, renewable energy and seafloor non-living resources to multidisciplinary areas such as marine environmental socio-economics and integrated management of marine space
Fisheries and aquatic ecology: including microbiology, benthic and pelagic marine biology, with an empirical, seagoing field research focus

A key feature that will be taken into consideration will be the potential of the candidate to attract European Union framework program funding and similar grants to increase the IMS competitiveness and visibility at the international level.
For the selected applicants a hiring procedure within the University and Turkish Higher Education Council will be initiated. During this period, the successful applicants are highly encouraged to apply to start-up funds such as TUBITAK 2232 Reintegration Grants, Marie Sklodowska-Curie fellowships and European Research Council Starting Grants.

For consideration, the applicants have to satisfy the minimum requirements for recruitment at METU:
- A PhD degree, preferably obtained in USA or Europe
- If the PhD is from Turkey, at least one year of postdoctoral stay in a leading research institution abroad, with a productive record of post-doctoral publications.
- Proven ability of communication and teaching in English (For candidates with a non-English native language a minimum TOEFL score of 102 will be required for official appointment).
