Job description

As part of the project “Past perspectives on tipping elements of the climate system: The Amazon rainforest and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (PPTEAM)” (PI Prof. Dr. Cristiano M. Chiessi) funded by the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), the Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Laboratory of the University of São Paulo is looking for an enthusiastic and independent postdoc with background in organic or inorganic isotope geochemistry applied to fluvial sediments.

The postdoctoral project
Environmental archives like marine sediment cores register environmental conditions through proxies in an indirect way. Thus, the appropriate reconstruction of paleoenvironmental changes relies on understanding the relationship between the aimed original environmental signal and the analyzed proxy. This project aims at: (i) determining how environmental signals are recorded in modern fluvial sediments; and (ii) assessing possible seasonal changes in environmental signals present in fluvial sediments. The selected candidate will collect samples and analyze them for the following proxies in modern fluvial sediments from tropical South America with emphasis on the Amazon River drainage basin: (i) neodymium isotopic composition of the detrital fraction (a proxy for the source of detrital sediments); and (ii) stable hydrogen and carbon isotopic composition of plant-wax-derived lipids (proxies for the amount of rainfall and the main types of vegetation, respectively). Other proxies may be added during the project. This project will ultimately provide an in-depth understanding about the way environmental signals are recorded in modern sediments and transported by tropical South American rivers, improving tropical South American paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on marine sediment cores.

The candidate
The Paleoceanography and Paleoclimatology Laboratory of the University of São Paulo is looking for an enthusiastic and independent candidate who is already specialized in organic or inorganic isotope geochemistry applied to fluvial sediments. Previous field-work experience sampling fluvial sediments is mandatory, since the post-doc will lead numerous field campaigns. Due to the international character of the PPTEAM project, excellent English communication skills are expected.

Conditions of the position
The selected candidate will receive a postdoctoral fellowship from FAPESP in the amount of BRL7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in unforeseen items directly related to the research activity. Additional information about the postdoctoral fellowship from FAPESP can be obtained at the FAPESP website http://www.fapesp.br/en/postdoc. This fellowship is 24 month-long.

How to apply

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. Interested candidates should apply until November 7th 2019 via email to Cristiano M. Chiessi (chiessi@usp.br) with the title “Candidate for postdoctoral fellowship in Isotope Geochemistry”. The following documents should compose the application: (i) one-page cover letter describing the candidate’s scientific interests and career objectives; (ii) curriculum vitae with publications list; and (iii) one recommendation letter.
