Job description

The Unit for Tectonics and Geodynamics at RWTH Aachen is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in continental tectonics for 3 years. The position will focus on using analogue model experiments to investigate the interaction between sedimentation processes, inheritance and shear zone localisation during continental rifting. Development of a new analogue modelling apparatus and helping students in the laboratory forms part of the responsibilities with this position. The group for Tectonics and Geodynamics is a continuation under a new chair of the previous group on Structural Geology, Tectonics and Geomechanics.

What we seek:

  • This position requires proven experience in setting up and conducting analogue (sandbox) experiments of brittle-viscous tectonic processes (such as continental rifting, basin formation and inversion, and/or the formation of accretionary wedges).
  • A strong background in quantitative techniques for analysing experimental results and comparing to natural observations is an advantage.
  • Applicants must have completed their PhD at the time the position starts.
  • Applicants are expected to be able to work independently as well as collaborate across disciplines.
  • Applicants should be able to express themselves fluently in English, written and orally.

Your responsibilities:

  • The successful applicant is expected to develop a new analogue modelling apparatus for simulating continental tectonic deformation processes.
  • The successful applicant will use the new modelling apparatus and/or existing equipment to conduct analogue experiments on strain partitioning in continental rifting.
  • (Co-)supervision of Bachelor and Master students and some involvement in teaching is to be expected.
  • Presentation of results at (inter-)national conferences and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals is expected.

What we offer:

  • The successful candidate will be employed as a regular employee.
  • The position is for 3 years and to be filled by March 1, 2020.
  • This is a full-time position. It is also available as part-time employment per request.
  • The salary corresponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
