About HKUST (GZ)

Formally established in June 2022, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou)(HKUST) is a cooperatively-run higher education institution between the Chinese mainland and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. HKUST has obtained approval from the Ministry of Education (MoE) and become the first legally-independent educational institution co-established by the Mainland and Hong Kong since the announcement and implementation of the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” and the “Overall Plan for Deepening Globally Oriented Comprehensive Co-operation amongst Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in Nansha of Guangzhou”. With a spirit of pioneering innovation, HKUST charts new territories in cross-disciplinary education and explores new frontiers in pedagogies, aiming to serve as a role model of the mainland-Hong Kong integrated educational development and become a world-famous high-level university, endeavoring to nurture future-oriented, high-level and innovative talents.

HKUST offers undergraduate and postgraduate education under the auspices of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province. Admission of undergraduate students will follow the nation’s unified admission policy, while students will receive their certificates of graduation from HKUST as well as their bachelor’s degree certificates and degree diplomas from both HKUST and HKUST respectively according to the graduation requirements of HKUST and HKUST. HKUST will also offer master’s and doctoral degrees in accordance with relevant national policies and the University’s graduation requirements, and award HKUST master’s and doctoral degree certificates to students.

In response to the increasingly complex challenges faced by the rapidly changing world, HKUST adopts a brand-new and cross-disciplinary academic structure featuring “Hub” and “Thrust” to substitute the conventional one characterized by “school” and “department”, facilitating cross-disciplinary integration while vigorously developing emerging and frontier disciplines. This is a groundbreaking move in the higher education community across the globe.

HKUST comprises four Hubs, namely Function Hub,Information Hub, Systems Hub, Society Hub and offers 15 postgraduate degrees. The admission of undergraduate students will begin in 2023, with the first batch of programs covering artificial intelligence, data science and big data technology.

HKUST is located at No.1 Duxue Road, Qingsheng Hub Cluster, Nansha District, Guangzhou. The campus covers an area of about 1,669 mu (111.3 hectares) and is divided into two construction phases. The first phase covers an area of about 716 mu (47.7 hectares) with a floorage of about 636,000 square meters (63.6 hectares), which will be officially put into use in September 2022. The design of the campus blends natural scenery with architecture, with key cutting-edge technologies for energy conservation and environmental protection adopted during the design and construction process, in a bid to establish the campus as a new benchmark of green, smart and sustainable development.

Job description

Embracing a spirit of innovation, HKUST pioneers cross-disciplinary education and explores groundbreaking pedagogies, aiming to serve as a model for mainland-Hong Kong integrated educational development and become a renowned global university that nurtures future-oriented, highly-skilled, and innovative talents.

To address the complex challenges posed by a rapidly changing world, HKUST has adopted an innovative cross-disciplinary academic structure, featuring “Hub” and “Thrust” instead of the traditional “school” and “department” organization. This revolutionary approach promotes interdisciplinary integration and fosters the growth of emerging and frontier disciplines, setting a new precedent in global higher education.

HKUST comprises four Hubs: Function Hub, Information Hub, Systems Hub, and Society Hub, offering 15 postgraduate degrees. The university will admit its first undergraduate students in 2023, with initial programs focused on artificial intelligence, data science, and big data technology.

The Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) Thrust is a department within HKUST, aiming to become a leading educational and research entity in interdisciplinary studies of ocean-atmosphere-land interactions, with an emphasis on sustainable environmental management, climate risk identification, climate adaptation, and resilience. The EOAS employs a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on research in ocean physics and bio-geochemistry, atmospheric physics and chemistry, watershed hydrology, and earth surface sciences within coupled land-atmosphere, land-ocean, and atmosphere-ocean systems, as well as climate adaptation and resilience. Appointees are expected to engage in cutting-edge, innovative scientific research, undertake national-level research projects, and contribute to the advancement of multi-disciplinary initiatives.

Qualification of Candidates
We are currently seeking candidates with research backgrounds in oceanography, atmospheric science, climate change, earth system science and related fields. Specifically, we are interested in candidates specializing in the following research areas:

Earth and urban system science: e.g., earth and urban system observations and modeling, urban informatics, in-situ and satellite remote sensing, human-environment interactions and sustainability.

Climate adaptation and resilience: e.g., climate risk identification, assessment and modeling, ecosystem-based adaptation, water resources management and adaptation, climate-resilient health systems, climate-resilient agriculture and food systems, urban resilience.

Coastal oceanography: e.g., physical, biological, chemical, and fishery oceanography, as well as sea-air and land-sea interactions.

Atmospheric sciences: e.g., atmospheric chemistry, air pollution and climate change interactions, climate science and atmospheric dynamics, cloud and aerosol process modeling, aerosol remote sensing, and aerosol-weather and aerosol-climate interactions.

Hydrology and Earth Surface Processes: e.g., surface process and land-use modeling, water quality and management in surface and underground water, their physical, chemical, and biological processes.

Candidates with expertise in these areas are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must hold a PhD degree in oceanography, atmospheric science, environmental science, climate change, or related fields, along with relevant research and teaching experiences.

For the Assistant Professor position, applicants should have a minimum of 2 years post-doctoral experience and strong research track records.

For the Associate Professor position, applicants should demonstrate a strong record of teaching, student supervision, and notable research and publication achievements.

For the Full Professor position, applicants should possess world-class academic achievements, strong academic leadership and reputation, and an excellent record of research and publications.

A good command of written and spoken English, as well as the ability to teach effectively in English, is required.

As the medium of instruction at HKUST is English, the university is committed to promoting diversity in recruitment and ensuring equal opportunity employment. We strongly encourage suitable candidates from diverse backgrounds to submit their applications.

Remuneration and Conditions of Service
Salary for all positions is highly competitive at an international standard and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Generous research funds, ample laboratory space, and excellent research equipment and support will be provided.
All positions are tenure-track Chinese mainland appointments offered by the HKUST-GZ campus, in accordance with Chinese employment laws and regulations.

Appointments at the Professor rank and some Associate Professor ranks will be made on a substantive basis, while initial appointments for other tenure-track faculty ranks will be made on a fixed-term contract of up to three years.
