Higher education teaching of geoscience: how can the EGU help? 8 July 2019 EGU’s Committee on Education aims to provide support for higher education, from organising workshops to providing networking opportunities for all those teaching geoscience in higher education. We invite PhD students, postgraduates, research fellows, academic staff and any others teaching geoscience in higher education to fill in a short survey to help us understand the role EGU could play in further supporting higher education. New job vacancies at the EGU office: Chief Strategy & Finance Officer and Head of Media, Communications & Outreach 28 June 2019 The EGU is hiring for two positions at its Executive Office in Munich, Germany. Following the launch of the EGU 2019-2025 strategy, we have created a new position of Chief Strategy & Finance Officer to lead the creation and implementation of a strategic plan for the EGU. We are also looking for a Head of Media, Communications & Outreach to manage EGU press and communication activities and lead the media, communications and outreach team. Read more
Climate impact of clouds made from airplane contrails may triple by 2050 Press release 27 June 2019 In the right conditions, airplane contrails can linger in the sky as contrail cirrus – ice clouds that can trap heat inside the Earth’s atmosphere. Their climate impact has been largely neglected in global schemes to offset aviation emissions, even though contrail cirrus have contributed more to warming the atmosphere than all CO2 emitted by aircraft since the start of aviation. A new study published in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics has found that, due to air traffic activity, the climate impact of contrail cirrus will be even more significant in the future, tripling by 2050. Up until 15 August 2019, we welcome applications from EGU members interested in organising an Angioletta Coradini Conference, a Mary Anning Conference or an Alexander von Humboldt Conference. To apply, please check the conference series benefits and requirements page before submitting your proposal. We also welcome proposals for training schools scheduled for 2020. Read more

Results of the EGU Extraordinary Spring Election 2019 for SSS Division President announced 15 April 2019 The EGU election for the role of President of the Soil System Sciences (SSS) Division was open for votes from all 2019 EGU members affiliated with the division from 9 April until 14 April 2019. Claudio Zaccone was elected as SSS Division President for a two-year term (2019–2021) starting today. He may stand for re-election for a further two years at the EGU Autumn Election 2019. More than 90% of glacier volume in the Alps could be lost by 2100 Press release 9 April 2019 New research on how glaciers in the European Alps will fare under a warming climate has come up with concerning results. Under a limited warming scenario, glaciers would lose about two-thirds of their present-day ice volume, while under strong warming, the Alps would be mostly ice free by 2100. The results, now published in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) journal The Cryosphere, are presented today (9 April) at the EGU General Assembly 2019 in Vienna, Austria. Read more
EGU Public Engagement Grants 2019 winners announced 8 April 2019 The EGU Outreach Committee has named Philip Heron as a winner of the EGU Public Engagement Grants 2019 for his project ‘Think like a scientist’. Astrid Harjung and her colleagues Laura Coulson, Romana Hödl and Katrin Attermeyer have also won one of this year’s grants with their project ‘Biogeocaching – a scavenger hunt for the treasures of biology around Lake Lunz’.
