ISSUE 30, JUNE 2017 EGU NEWSLETTER Monthly information service for members of the European Geosciences Union Read this email in HTML format at https://www.egu.eu/newsletter/egu/30/email/ ============================================================ HIGHLIGHTS At the start of this month, the US president announced the country would be withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, a decision that rejects the overwhelming political and scientific consensus. The EGU reacted by strongly opposing this decision and reaffirming its support for the EGU scientific community (https://egu.eu/3IROYP) and its science. EGU President Jonathan Bamber also wrote in defence of science in an opinion piece (https://egu.eu/5QJTDV), a follow-up to the ‘Make Facts Great Again: how can scientists stand up for science?’ (https://egu.eu/4AEHQ0) Union Symposium at the EGU 2017 General Assembly. An editorial about the session was also published in Nature Geoscience (https://egu.eu/5GS189), highlighting the need not only for the public to trust in scientists, but also for scientists to trust the people. In other news, the EGU has opened a call for financial support for training schools (https://egu.eu/9YEID6). If you’d like to organise a training school in the Earth, planetary or space sciences in 2018, please apply for funding from the EGU by 15 August 2017. ------------------------------------------------------------ IN THIS ISSUE General Assembly EGU News Journal Watch EGU Blogs ------------------------------------------------------------ EGU NEWS * Apply for EGU financial support to organise a training school (https://egu.eu/9YEID6, deadline 15 August) * Press Release: EGU’s reaction to US decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement (https://egu.eu/3IROYP) More EGU news items are available on the EGU website at https://www.egu.eu/news/all/. ------------------------------------------------------------ GENERAL ASSEMBLY * EGU 2018 public call for sessions starting on 10 July (http://egu2018.eu) * Deadlines and milestones for the EGU 2018 General Assembly announced (https://egu.eu/7IO1CL) More about the EGU General Assembly at https://www.egu2018.eu. ------------------------------------------------------------ JOURNAL WATCH Geoscientific Model Development (GMD) * STRAPS v1.0: evaluating a methodology for predicting electron impact ionisation mass spectra for the aerosol mass spectrometer (https://egu.eu/51E7JG) Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) * The European 2015 drought from a hydrological perspective (https://egu.eu/2PXC4Z) Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) * Statistical characteristics of convective wind gusts in Germany (https://egu.eu/2VBY3A) * Debris-flow modeling at Meretschibach and Bondasca catchments, Switzerland: sensitivity testing of field-data-based entrainment model (https://egu.eu/1IK4LM) The Cryosphere (TC) * Hypsometric amplification and routing moderation of Greenland ice sheet meltwater release (https://egu.eu/00CRGP) Other papers highlighted by the editors of EGU's open access journals are available online at https://www.egu.eu/news/journal-watch/. ------------------------------------------------------------ EGU BLOGS GeoLog, the EGU blog * GeoTalk: The life and death of an ocean – is the Atlantic Ocean on its way to closing?
