ISSUE 61, JANUARY 2020 EGU NEWSLETTER Monthly information service for members of the European Geosciences Union View this email in HTML format at https://www.egu.eu/newsletter/egu/61/email/) ------------------------------------------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS We are looking forward to welcoming all participants to the 2020 EGU General Assembly (https://www.egu2020.eu/) on 3–8 May in Vienna. In addition to many exciting scientific sessions, the meeting will feature hundreds of short courses and networking events plus a packed exhibition hall! The 2020 General Assembly will also continue a number of traditions, including the popular Imaggeo Photo Contest (https://egu.eu/4C7ZTG/). You have until 15 February 2020 to enter your photos and videos for a chance to win fame and fortune – in the form of a free registration to next year’s General Assembly. Another tradition is the annual mentoring programme (https://egu.eu/9B57MA/), which supports first-time conference attendees and helps them assemble their own professional networks. The programme, which only lasts for the duration of the General Assembly, depends on both mentors and mentees signing up (https://egu.eu/0HWYE9/); brief applications are due by 8 March 2020. In case you missed them: here are the winners of the EGU's Best Blog Posts (https://egu.eu/2I4MH5/) and the Best of Imaggeo (https://egu.eu/6DVXIR/) 2019 competitions as well as the year’s Top 10 most-read blog posts (https://egu.eu/8CXT57/). (The most read? Think Game of Thrones (https://egu.eu/8KAD1E/).) Do you have a geoscience outreach project you’d like to develop? The call for funding is open until 15 February 2020 for EGU Public Engagement Grants (https://egu.eu/67UF3L/) Winners receive 1500 EUR and one free registration to next year’s General Assembly. If you’d like to organise a meeting addressing a focused, cutting-edge topic at the frontiers of geoscience research, you have until 29 February 2020 to propose an EGU Galileo Conference (https://egu.eu/08F6DT/). ------------------------------------------------------------ IN THIS ISSUE General Assembly EGU News Journal Watch EGU Blogs ------------------------------------------------------------ GENERAL ASSEMBLY * Now that the abstracts are in, it’s time to register (https://egu.eu/1W5S3V/) for the EGU General Assembly (early registration rates end on 31 March 2020). * All General Assembly participants are expected to follow the General Assembly rules of conduct (https://egu.eu/87F61L/) and the EGU Code of Conduct (https://egu.eu/2YCD45), which was recently updated to uphold the highest standards of scientific integrity, open science and open access research. * EGU is implementing extensive greening measures (https://egu.eu/04MOJS/), including offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions (https://egu.eu/23PX4L/) for the travel of all participants, for the 2020 General Assembly. Please consider travelling by train (https://egu.eu/1LZW9M/) to Vienna and packing a reusable mug and water bottle! * Upload your photos and videos by 15 February 2020 to the Imaggeo Photo Competition (https://egu.eu/4C7ZTG/) for a chance to win a free registration to next year’s meeting. * Applications for the EGU General Assembly mentoring programme (https://egu.eu/0HWYE9/) are due by 8 March 2020. Plenty of conference travel tips, presentation pointers and fun facts can also be found in our First-timer’s Guide to the 2020 General Assembly (https://egu.eu/9YVPY1/). The series will include future sessions on careers outside of academia and getting more involved in education, among other topics. * The Outreach Committee, which focuses on public engagement activities, communication with scientists and the media, and policy issues, is seeking new members (https://egu.eu/4UA33L/). Brief applications are due by 20 March 2020. * Another great EGU volunteer opportunity: apply now to be a division Early Career Scientist (ECS) representative (https://egu.eu/4KIMLP/)! * Press release: Air pollution in New York City linked to wildfires hundreds of miles away (https://egu.eu/4UUW53/) * Abstracts for the 7th EGU Galileo Conference (https://egu.eu/5ZV38Z/) – the second workshop on isotope-based studies of water partitioning and plant-soil interactions – are due on 30 April 2020. The meeting will be held in Hannover, Germany from 22–24 July. * The abstract deadline for the 8th EGU Galileo Conference (https://egu.eu/26FU35/), to be held in Napoli, Italy from 5–8 October, is 31 March 2020. The meeting will explore the European vision for hydrological observations and experimentation. * If you're interested in funding a public outreach project, please remember that applications for EGU Public Engagement Grants (https://egu.eu/67UF3L/) are due on 15 February 2020.
