ISSUE 64, APRIL 2020 EGU NEWSLETTER Monthly information service for members of the European Geosciences Union View this email in HTML format at https://www.egu.eu/newsletter/egu/64/email/ ------------------------------------------------------------ HIGHLIGHTS With Sharing Geoscience Online (https://egu.eu/97WBA7/), EGU’s first completely virtual meeting, about to begin on Monday 4 May, it’s now time to select what you’d like your experience to be (https://egu.eu/8L29KN/)! … As you enter the text into the browser window, you are thrust, sci-fi style, through a glowing tunnel of light … You enter a url, then click… Straight away, a comment pops up – someone likes your work! They want to collaborate on an idea sparked by your uploaded presentation materials … and it sounds like there is funding! … What comes next? You never know where Sharing Geoscience Online (https://egu.eu/97WBA7/) might take you; it’s the beginning of an exciting experiment for us all. The largest-ever virtual geoscience meeting (https://egu.eu/12W743/) is an extensive pilot project, and with more than 700 live text-chat sessions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTCPKDmgSVw) scheduled during the course of the week – and just six weeks to set everything up – it’s possible that something could go wrong. If so, we ask for your patience as we work together to test this model that contributes to minimising the carbon footprint of a major geoscience meeting. Throughout the week of #shareEGU20 (https://egu.eu/74CY87/) and beyond, EGU is providing a variety of ways for you to interact about your research with the global Earth, planetary and space science community. Whichever method you choose, we hope you’ll reach out to others and discuss your ideas. It's up to you to decide when and what to explore (https://egu.eu/8L29KN/)! So what comes next? * Upload your presentation materials (https://egu.eu/0KNND5/) * Text chat during your session’s scheduled time slot (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTCPKDmgSVw) * Watch a live-streamed session or pre-recorded Short Course (https://egu.eu/01HE8L/) * Comment on others’ presentation materials (https://egu.eu/38OYN3/) * Participate in the Geoscience Games Night (https://egu.eu/6SQXJ2/) on Wednesday * Tweet the #DataHelpDesk (https://egu.eu/0VKMTI/) * Vote in the Imaggeo photo competition (https://egu.eu/1T4C18/) * #shareEGUpride (https://egu.eu/73BC5W/) during the 12:00pm Friday virtual reception * #shareEGUart (https://egu.eu/43MZ0B/) * Network with Early Career Scientists (https://blogs.egu.eu/) each evening Regardless of how you decide to engage, we hope you enjoy the meeting! ------------------------------------------------------------ IN THIS ISSUE Sharing Geoscience Online EGU News Journal Watch EGU Science in the News EGU Blogs ------------------------------------------------------------ Sharing Geoscience Online All the #shareEGU20 resources you'll need, right at your fingertips: * Authors: upload your presentation materials (https://egu.eu/0B3BNB/); comment on others (https://egu.eu/38OYN3/); and watch this short video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTCPKDmgSVw) to learn what to expect during the live text chats * Conveners: please watch this text chat walk-through video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RafRUF3k8kw) before your session starts! * Journalists: view the virtual press conferences and programme highlights (https://egu.eu/5RHPQQ/) * Searchable Programme (https://egu.eu/25CK42/) More EGU2020 information is available on the meeting website (https://egu2020.eu/sharing_geoscience_online/). ------------------------------------------------------------ EGU News * EGU statement of support for the European Research Council (https://egu.eu/4RGDKM/) * Earth Day Turns 50 (https://egu.eu/0O47MW/) * Obituary: Jonathan Tennant (1988-2020) (https://egu.eu/1L1YS6/) * EGU’s Education Committee has issued a call for applications for a series of grants to fund the preparation of university-level geoscience teaching materials (https://egu.eu/4JPJRL/).
