EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 80, AUGUST 2021 ====================================== Observing and measuring the planet Using satellites and photographs to understand and communicate about our world. Understanding the Earth relies on having accurate measurements and observations of it – something that researchers in the fields of Geodesy (https://www.egu.eu/g/home/), Geodynamics (https://www.egu.eu/gd/home/) and Earth and Space Science Informatics (https://www.egu.eu/essi/home/) really understand. This month we got to hear from Rebekka Steffen (https://egu.eu/8RVJNR/), the Geodesy Division’s Early Career Scientist co-representative, about why we all use Geodesy in our daily lives when we activate our GPS, but also how it is essential for understanding how ice sheets affect the shape and behaviour of tectonic plates. We also took a look at how the way scientists observe the Earth through our research can be used for science communication by sharing our Top 5 Tips for what makes a good science photograph (https://egu.eu/64DNJR/) for World Photography Day, on the EGUblogs. Additionally don't forget to register for free (https://egu.eu/3RKO3L/) for the 2021 AOGS/EGU Joint Conference on New Dimensions for Natural Hazards in Asia, being held online 20-22 September.
