EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 87, MARCH 2022 ===================================== Geoscience and technology: a limitless new world New age technologies support researchers in their search for scientific discovery Could we ever control the weather? A new study(https://egu.eu/8PQL3U/) using computer simulations suggests one day we could! Researchers used a system called a “butterfly attractor” in chaos theory to make small adjustments in the weather system, to find they could control and change extreme weather phenomena. We also met Federico Amato(https://people.epfl.ch/federico.amato), environmental data miner, who works with next-generation analytics tools for scientific discovery, in areas of data science, machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). “We always hear people saying that we live in the data age, and this is also true for geosciences. With my research I try to bridge the areas of data science and applied urban and Earth system sciences,” he explains in conversation(https://egu.eu/7R6HQI/) with EGU Committee Programmes Co-ordinator Simon Clark. Today we live in an age where YouTubers can single-handedly inspire a science-policy debate in Europe. In this month’s GeoPolicy blog(https://egu.eu/43Y35E/), EGU Policy Manager Chloe Hill examines how video platforms such as YouTube support science communication and influence major political decisions. Lastly, the countdown to EGU22 continues! Register now(https://egu.eu/1WKTZS/) for the EGU22 General Assembly(https://www.egu22.eu/) taking place on-site (Vienna, Austria) and virtually. On-site registration closes at 13.00 CEST, 14 April, and online registration stays open throughout the meeting until 27 May 2022. For more information, click here(https://egu.eu/37Q37A/). DEADLINES --------- 14 APRIL Registration for EGU22 on-site participation(https://egu.eu/5V8LEH/) 27 MAY Registration for EGU22 virtual participation(https://egu.eu/5V8LEH/) SCIENCE POLICY -------------- GeoPolicy blog: How a professional YouTuber inspired a science-policy debate in Europe The way we acquire and share information has changed dramatically in the last two decades. EGU Policy Manager Chloe Hill explores the benefits of having an accessible online source of information and whether scientists can use this to engage with peers and policymakers. This blog(https://egu.eu/43Y35E/) dissects the role of video platforms such as YouTube in supporting science communication and influencing political decisions. EGU22: Ask a Science for Policy Expert This year, EGU22 participants can have their questions answered by science for policy experts through 30-minute 1-on-1 meetings throughout the week of the General Assembly (23-27 May 2022). Meetings can be requested both virtually and in-person. Please submit your question(s) or topic of discussion here(https://egu.eu/9IXBF6/) by 16 May 2022. You will be paired with an expert who is able to discuss them. JOURNAL WATCH ------------- “The Field Observatory user interface has not only enabled farmers to monitor impacts of their carbon farming practices, but also to connect and compare their own and others’ data and practices. Features in the user interface are co-created with the farmers and developed accordingly.” Nevalainen et al, 2022 Geoscientific Instrumentation, Methods and Data Systems GEOROUNDUP March EGU journal highlights(https://egu.eu/5KT7JL/) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- Nominations open for EGU Medal and Awards EGU offers over 50 medals and awards to honour individual contributions to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. Send in your nominations by 15 June 2022! The 2023 awards and medals, which will be announced in October 2022, will be presented to their recipients at the EGU General Assembly 2023.
