EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 89, MAY 2022 =================================== Science without borders 14,000+ researchers from 116 countries gathered on-site and online for Europe’s largest Geoscience event After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, EGU’s annual General Assembly EGU22(https://www.egu22.eu/) returned to Vienna, Austria, and an in-person format, while retaining its online component to make the scientific conference as accessible as possible – for researchers, scientists, and journalists across the Earth, planetary and space sciences. Over 14,000 attendees from 116 countries discussed and shared the latest in geoscience research throughout the week-long conference from 23 – 27 May 2022. EGU thanks all attendees for their support and enthusiastic participation at the Union’s first ever hybrid conference. This month we also spoke to Jenny Turton(https://egu.eu/5Q1R33/), the incoming Union-level Representative for Early Career Scientists (ECS). Jenny is a postdoc researcher working on atmospheric modelling and meteorological observations, focusing on atmospheric processes that affect the ice. Find out more in this month’s Geo Talk blog(https://egu.eu/4LF1BG/). EGU’s Outreach Committee seeks new members(https://egu.eu/9E1II7/) by 12 June 2022 to promote the Earth, planetary, and space sciences among scientists, the public, and policymakers. Applications are also open for EGU’s Science Journalism Fellowship(https://egu.eu/91VE8J/) and Public Engagement Grant(https://egu.eu/15CLVL/), apply by 17 June 2022! See here(https://egu.eu/7HAW28/) for more information. The GYA’s Science Advice Resource Centre May’s Science for Policy Newsletter(https://egu.eu/1EYR5R/) encourages you to visit the Global Young Academy’s Science Advice Resource Centre(https://egu.eu/3CNA6V/) for a quick science-policy fix! You’ll find easily digestible 500-word summaries of peer-reviewed articles compiled through a Global Young Academy writing contest. Summaries include a diverse range of writing styles and voices, thematically distinct, and falling within one of three categories: Government Scientific Advice, Science Policymaking, and Science Diplomacy & Science Communication. JOURNAL WATCH ------------- “…any hazard model could usefully incorporate the numerical outputs in investigating cascading hazards… Such a modelling effort would help resolve the significance of this hazard source compared to alternative tsunamigenic sources and volcanic hazards across varying magnitudes of eruption.” Hayward et al, 2022 Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences GEOROUNDUP May EGU journal highlights(https://egu.eu/98J45X/) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- Last call for EGU Medal and Awards nominations! EGU offers over 50 medals and awards to honour individual contributions to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. We encourage diverse nominations, so make sure to submit yours by 15 June 2022! RESOURCE OF THE MONTH --------------------- Vlog your research abstract Vlogs are a powerful way to communicate scientific research to broad audiences, by combining audiovisuals, storytelling, and the ‘human face’ behind the science. Watch our free EGUwebinar(https://egu.eu/3L616C/) to find out the ‘ingredients’ of an effective vlog. UPCOMING DATES -------------- EGUwebinar: Look Who’s Talking: Decoding Science for a Non-science Audience As scientists, how can you engage with the media and communicate your findings to an audience that may not have the same scientific background? Join our webinar at 13.00 CEST, 15 June 2022. Register now(https://egu.eu/0AVOMQ/)! Apply to EGU’s Science Journalism Fellowship The fellowships offer journalists €5000 to report on ongoing research in the Earth, planetary or space sciences. Deadline for applications is 17 June 2022. Find out more here(https://egu.eu/91VE8J/). Call for applications to EGU’s Public Engagement Grant Are you developing an outreach project to raise awareness of geosciences outside the scientific community? Three innovative projects will each be awarded €1500. Last day to apply is 17 June 2022. See more here(https://egu.eu/15CLVL/).
