EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 92, AUGUST 2022 ====================================== Our energy future and why it matters How do existing energy resources inform climate change mitigation? The hype around hydrogen as a clean fuel isn’t exactly new, but latest research tells a different story. Scientists from the Environmental Defense Fund have been studying the global shift to hydrogen to decarbonize the environment. While hydrogen is certainly part of the solution to get to net zero, they find that this fuel of the future may not be as clean as we think(https://egu.eu/1DKC43/). In fact, the near- and medium-term warming impacts of hydrogen emissions are far higher than widely perceived. Researcher in energy transition under climate change Jarmo Kikstra(https://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/j.kikstra20) tells us about the delicate intersections between social and natural sciences. Jarmo says the big question is not “will climate mitigation lead to more poverty” but rather “what pathways exist to both eradicate poverty and meet ambitious climate goals.” Find out more on this insightful discussion in EGU’s Geotalk blog(https://egu.eu/53EYWV/). On World Biofuels Day, EGU Media Officer Gillian D’Souza examined the commercially available biofuels around the world and lists some new ones under development. But can these new biofuels be economically viable and still not compete with food crops to create a global food crisis?(https://egu.eu/5SXRGO/) Only time will tell. In other news, the EGU Biodiversity Task Force has made seven key recommendations to the EU Nature Restoration Law(https://egu.eu/2GFZFY/) which will now be amended and either passed or rejected by the European Parliament and The Council of the European Union. The Task Force aims to bridge the gap between science and policy, delivering scientific information and expertise to where it is most needed. This month’s GeoPolicy blog(https://egu.eu/2GFZFY/) by EGU Policy Manager Chloe Hill provides a summary of the key recommendations provided by the EGU Biodiversity Task Force to the EU Nature Restoration Law. What is Science Diplomacy? Are you a scientist curious about science diplomacy and how to engage with it? Do you know the difference between Science in diplomacy, Diplomacy for science and Science for diplomacy? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Check out our recent EGU blog(https://egu.eu/70P1L0/) to know more about science diplomacy, the different types and how to better engage with it. JOURNAL WATCH ------------- “The primary goals of this study were to design, build and validate a low-cost transmitter-receiver FDEM system for under USD 400 that is of comparable size and signal transmission strength to commercial grade systems… This proof of concept device provides a foundation for the future development and use of low-cost FDEM systems for near-surface geophysical and other related investigations.” Wilson et al, 2022 Geoscientific Instrumentation, Methods and Data Systems GEOROUNDUP August EGU journal highlights(https://egu.eu/0WBNZ8/) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- Apply to EGU’s Policy Pairing scheme and spend a week in Brussels with an MEP! To promote evidence-based policymaking and encourage stronger science-policy partnerships, EGU will sponsor a scientist to work alongside a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for one week in November 2022. This year’s pairing is with Norbert Lins(https://www.europarl.europa.eu/meps/en/124808/NORBERT_LINS/home). Deadline is 12 September 2022.
