EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 93, SEPTEMBER 2022 ========================================= Europe’s leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space research turns 20! What can researchers and our community expect from EGU going ahead? This month’s newsletter is a special one: European Geosciences Union (EGU) turns 20! EGU President Helen Glaves(https://egu.eu/6PTS29/) and EGU Executive Secretary Philippe Courtial(https://egu.eu/9XXHA6/) reflect on two decades of the Union – its growth in size and ambition, how and why EGU supports Early Career Scientists, and the direction the Union plans to take in the years to come. Since it was first founded, EGU has grown in strength and scale to include 22 scientific divisions, responsible for activities related to the Earth, planetary and space sciences. We spoke to our Division Presidents(https://egu.eu/348N5O/) to hear what this 20-year milestone means to them. EGU Editorial Manager Berit Schwichtenberg writes about a once-radical and innovative idea from 20 years ago that turned into a global success story: interactive peer review. Read her EGUblog(https://egu.eu/4PM5Q4/) for insights into the foundation of EGU’s open access journals(https://www.egu.eu/publications/open-access-journals/), and the benefits for both authors and reviewers involved in the publishing process. As part of EGU’s 20 year anniversary celebrations, the editors of the Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics(https://www.atmospheric-chemistry-and-physics.net/) (ACP) journal together with the EGU Publications Committee met at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry to discuss new ideas for greater visibility and accessibility of open access publications including free speech, critical discussion and transparency. Click here(https://egu.eu/58MXMY/) for insightful takeaways from their discussion. Over the years, EGU has expanded the many ways it offers support to researchers, especially in the early stages of their career. Whether you pursue a career inside academia, or seek work in a different field, in industry or policy, or something completely different – EGU is here to help you with the top 5 careers resources(https://egu.eu/0N678U/) made by our community! DEADLINES --------- 14 OCTOBER Apply to be EGU's new Editorial Manager(https://www.egu.eu/news/924/job-alert-egu-editorial-manager/) 01 NOVEMBER* EGU23 abstracts & support applications(https://egu23.eu/about/deadlines_and_milestones.html) SCIENCE POLICY -------------- GeoPolicy: Top 10 science for policy resources recommended by the EGU’s Science for Policy Working Group Finally – a list of the top 10 most useful resources for scientists wanting to impact policy in Europe! Put together by the EGU Science for Policy Working Group, this list comprises practical examples and tools to help you better engage with science-policy networking platforms and understand the policymaking process. Find out more on this month’s GeoPolicy blog(https://egu.eu/5F99BG/)! Supporting EU’s biodiversity targets by bridging the science-policy divide On 15 November 2022, EGU and the European Parliament Intergroup on ‘Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’ will hold an event(https://ebcd.org/events/hybrid-event-supporting-eus-biodiversity-targets-by-bridging-the-science-policy-divide/) inside the European Parliament. The event is centred on helping researchers better support the EU’s biodiversity targets and EU Nature Restoration Law. Both physical and virtual attendance is possible. Register here(https://ebcd.org/events/hybrid-event-supporting-eus-biodiversity-targets-by-bridging-the-science-policy-divide/). JOURNAL WATCH ------------- “This is the first study that quantifies drought perception by water-management-related stakeholders at continental scale. Our findings show that different countries across Europe are affected by the hazard very differently. Large-scale weather patterns and differences in land surface properties play a crucial role in explaining this heterogeneity.” Blauhut et al, 2022 Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences GEOROUNDUP September EGU journal highlights(https://egu.eu/210RN2/) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- EGU awards Ayesha Tandon, Tim Kalvelage, Panos Tsimpoukis and Kerstin Hoppenhaus the 2022 Science Journalism Fellowships EGU’s funding(https://egu.eu/5LTOZB/) will allow Tandon to travel to Thailand to report on climate impact, migration and displacement patterns, Kalvelage to join a deep sea mining expedition in the Clarion-Clipperton-Zone (CCZ), Kerstin Hoppenhaus to follow scientists and miners down the Zechstein to study its raw material deposits, and Tsimpoukis to report from the oceanographic ship L’Europe and SANTORY: SANTORini’s Seafloor Volcanic ObservatorY. RESOURCE OF THE MONTH --------------------- To accept or not to accept: what makes a good scientific editor? Can just about anyone be a scientific editor or does it take certain special skills? UPCOMING DATES -------------- How To Communicate Sensitive Science To Non-experts Our EGUwebinar at 16:00 CEST on 19 October offers practical steps to engage with non-experts on risk and hazardous phenomena, including how to communicate sensitive information and encourage public behaviour change. Register now(https://egu.eu/2HKEZ1/)! Special Remote Sensing Applications webinar Join our free EGUwebinar at 11:00 CEST on 20 October with remote sensing specialists Will Maslanka and Betsabe De la Barreda-Bautista, who use remote sensing to identify the relationship between permafrost thaw and subsidence. Sign up here(https://egu.eu/8JCRIO/). EGU Science for Policy Hangout Join us at 16:30 CEST on 3 November to meet people working at the science-policy interface.
