Celebrating geoscientists who see the unseen…

…and push for change to secure the future

Some 142 years ago, German scientist Alfred Wegener was born. He spent most of his life defending a shocking theory: that all the world’s continents were once part of the same land mass before they drifted away. How did Wegener come to his theory of continental drift? He was willing to see what others couldn’t, and now his theory forms one of the bedrocks of modern geology. Fast forward to today, as we also meet Morelia Urlaub, researcher of underwater landslides, a phenomena otherwise unseen by humans, in this month’s Geotalk blog.

Also this month Sustainable Energy Geoscientist Munira Raji reflects on attending the UN’s COP27 in Egypt, discussing how geoscientists can help shape the energy transition using geoscience diplomacy tools and EGU Policy Manager Chloe Hill describes what happened during our special EU Parliament event, ‘Supporting the EU’s Biodiversity Targets by Bridging the Science-Policy Divide’.

Lastly, don’t forget to check your inbox for the next EGU23 monthly Update from Copernicus, arriving early December. If you miss an Update you can find them here where you can subscribe if you don’t already receive them.

GeoPolicy: A new step to build robust science-for-policy ecosystems in Europe

The European Commission recently published a Staff Working Document that aims to help Member States build capacity to use scientific knowledge more effectively in their policymaking processes. This month’s GeoPolicy Blog post provides a summary of the Staff Working Document, outlining key science for policy challenges and the EU instruments, resources and policy frameworks that can help Member States overcome them.

Science meets Regions Pairing Schemes

This month, EGU coordinated its 2022 Science-Policy Pairing Scheme with the selected EGU member, Elias Symeonakis and MEP Norbert Lins, the results of which will be shared with readers next month. Due to their many benefits, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has selected nine pairing projects from seven Member States to support this new Science meets Regions 2.0 element. Read more about these projects here!

Journal Watch

“In addition to outlining these best practices in geodynamic numerical modelling, we have shown how to apply them in a modelling study. Taking these best practices into account will lead to clearly communicated, unambiguous, reproducible geodynamic modelling studies.”
