EGU NEWSLETTER - ISSUE 96, DECEMBER 2022 ======================================== How does life on earth depend on the frozen realm? New insights from cold and remote regions on Earth Climate change signals are known to be amplified in the Arctic, and scientists have now found that the total ice growth in this region cannot offset sea ice loss in summer(https://tc.copernicus.org/articles/16/4779/2022/). These findings, published in the EGU open-access journal The Cryosphere(https://www.the-cryosphere.net/), improve our understanding of the atmosphere–ice–ocean system in a changing Arctic, and the impact this may have on human life. This month, we heard from Francesco Avanzi(https://mobile.twitter.com/worldofchecco), researcher in meltwater security. “Ice reflects a large amount of solar radiation and so it plays a key role in dictating global climate. It is also an efficient insulator which regulates soil and sea temperature and preserves life,” he explains. Francesco also tells us why climate change might threaten water security(https://egu.eu/5VCO7M/). Registrations will open soon for EGU23(https://www.egu23.eu/)! Remember to check your inbox for the next monthly Update from our conference organiser Copernicus, arriving early January. If you miss an Update you can find them here(https://www.egu23.eu/) where you can subscribe to receive them going forward. DEADLINES --------- 10 JANUARY EGU23 abstract submission (13:00 CET)(https://egu23.eu/programme/how_to_submit.html) 08 MARCH* EGU23 Early bird registration(https://egu23.eu/attend/register.html) SCIENCE POLICY -------------- GeoPolicy: 5 ways for scientists to take the lead on evidence-informed policymaking This month’s GeoPolicy blog post(https://egu.eu/6ZQG8N/) highlights 5 things that Europe’s scientific community can do to support evidence-informed policymaking! Taking inspiration from the EGU-Intergroup event(https://egu.eu/79K9XU/), it includes specific areas and tips highlighted by the experts on the panel. You can also rewatch the full biodiversity event here(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfURzQoLbSo). Additionally, don’t forget to follow the United Nation’s COP15(https://egu.eu/801V9T/) event to keep an eye on global biodiversity policy developments all through this month. Science for Policy newsletter We recommend reading this month’s science for policy newsletter(https://www.egu.eu/newsletter/policy/22/html/), where EGU Policy Manager Chloe Hill shares how to have your say on the next EU Funding Framework Programme and how to maximise your Policy Impact with a free EU Academy Course! If you have any further questions about policy opportunities for scientists in Europe, please get in touch via policy@egu.eu(mailto:policy@egu.eu) or on Twitter using @Chl0e_Hill. JOURNAL WATCH ------------- “The model predicts that, as CO2 levels rise, the equilibrium surface temperature in the Arctic will increase gradually at first. However, when μ exceeds 859 ppm, the model displays a saddle-node bifurcation where the stable cold solution is annihilated together with the unstable solution. At this point the climate would rapidly approach the warm stable solution where surface temperatures are significantly higher.” Kypke et al, 2022 Nonlinear Processes in Geophysics GEOROUNDUP December EGU journal highlights(https://egu.eu/0G22JM/) ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------- Geoscience Day in Helsinki EGU partnered with ICOS and the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU to jointly organise Geoscience Day focused on Carbon Farming and Climate Change(https://www.icos-cp.eu/event/1246).
