EGU SCIENCE FOR POLICY NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2022 ================================================= Dear EGU Experts, This month’s Science for Policy Newsletter provides you with opportunities to connect with policymakers and kick-start your science for policy engagement! Keep reading so that you don’t miss your chance to join the EGU-Intergroup science event on Tuesday 15 November, participate in a Science meets Regions Pairing Scheme, or apply for a Joint Research Centre Traineeship! This month’s Newsletter also highlights some open access EuroScience #SciPol resources and an exciting new science for policy initiative that aims to build capacity to increase the integration of scientific knowledge in policymaking in selected EU Member States. If you have any further questions or comments about the policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via [policy@egu.eu](mailto:policy@egu.eu) or on Twitter using [@Chl0e_Hill](https://twitter.com/Chl0e_Hill). Best wishes, Chloe Hill, EGU Policy Manager JOIN THE EGU-INTERGROUP SCIENCE FOR POLICY EVENT THIS TUESDAY! -------------------------------------------------------------- Don’t miss the EGU-Intergroup event, [European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity, and Sustainable Development](https://ebcd.org/intergroup/), this **Tuesday 15 November 2022 from 14:00 – 15:30 CET**! This event will outline specific areas where scientists can be of help to policymakers, highlight the advice provided in the [EGU response to the Nature Restoration Law](https://blogs.egu.eu/geolog/2022/08/26/geopolicy-responding-to-the-eu-nature-restoration-law/) document, and focus on the benefits of taking a solutions-directed, research-based approach to meet the EU’s biodiversity targets. Registration for online attendance is still open and all EGU members are invited to attend. [Please register in advance here](https://ebcd.webex.com/mw3300/mywebex/default.do?nomenu=true&siteurl=ebcd&service=6&rnd=0.5196201603810784&main_url=https%3A%2F%2Febcd.webex.com%2Fec3300%2Feventcenter%2Fevent%2FeventAction.do%3FtheAction%3Ddetail%26%26%26EMK%3D4832534b000000057ed6c0e3b2d808cd113d6b02fa585d53957c67c38164b2092e95a8543db26227%26siteurl%3Debcd%26confViewID%3D239772072705686924%26encryptTicket%3DSDJTSwAAAAXQwmhxNavJ39dw6NwL53p2CFTzJPiEUEFZzJM9cX8rlw2%26). APPLY FOR JRC TRAINEESHIP BEFORE 22 NOVEMBER -------------------------------------------- The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission currently has an [open call for Scientific Trainees](https://recruitment.jrc.ec.europa.eu/?type=GT) to join their ranks in March 2022 for up to 5 months. The call is seeking to recruit trainees across 20 thematic areas including climate change, energy, technology monitoring and assessment, ecosystem services and natural resources, data science, and science communication! The JRC functions as the Commission’s in-house science and knowledge service provider, employing scientists to provide independent scientific advice and support to EU policy. As a result, JRC traineeships provide a fantastic opportunity for scientists to gain a better understanding of how policy institutes operate, what current and upcoming issues are, and how to effectively communicate science with a policy audience. You can also read some personal insights and experiences from a [former JRC Trainee here](https://blogs.egu.eu/geolog/2019/09/27/one-americans-way-into-the-european-commission/) if you’d like to get the inside scoop before applying! All European Commission Traineeships are remunerated. The deadline to apply is **22 November 2022** and Traineeships will start on **1 March 2023**. [Apply now!](https://recruitment.jrc.ec.europa.eu/?type=GT) SCIENCE MEETS REGIONS PAIRING SCHEMES ------------------------------------- This week, EGU coordinated its [2022 Science-Policy Pairing Scheme](https://www.egu.eu/policy/pairing-schemes/3/the-2022-egu-science-policy-pairing-scheme-with-mep-norbert-lins/) with the selected EGU member, Elias Symeonakis and MEP Norbert Lins, the results of which will be shared with Newsletter readers next month! Pairing Schemes promote a culture of evidence-informed policymaking, encourage stronger science-policy partnerships, and provide those participating with a better understanding of how science can be effectively communicated and used by policymakers. Due to their many benefits, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has selected nine pairing projects from seven Member States to support this new Science meets Regions 2.0 element. You can [read more about these projects here](https://joint-research-centre.ec.europa.eu/science-meets-regions/pairing-schemes_en). CONNECTING SCIENCE AND POLICY IN EU MEMBER STATES ------------------------------------------------- On October 26, the European Commission published a Staff Working Document to promote policy debates and development in the Member States to better integrate scientific knowledge in policymaking. The document lays out the rationale for building capacity for science for policy, identifies key challenges, lists good practice cases, and identifies a set of EU support instruments, resources and policy frameworks to help Member States. This staff working document is just the beginning of a process that will hopefully create stronger connections between policymakers and scientists in different EU Member States that promote evidence-informed policymaking on local, national, and EU levels. You can [read the full document here](https://knowledge4policy.ec.europa.eu/news/commission-publishes-new-document-promote-discussion-better-use-scientific-knowledge_en) and keep an eye on the [EGU’s GeoPolicy Blog](https://blogs.egu.eu/geolog/category/geopolicy/) for an in-depth summary! OPEN ACCESS TO #SCIPOL CONTENT FROM EUROSCIENCE ----------------------------------------------- [EuroScience](https://www.euroscience.org), the European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology, has recently made the sessions hosted during their ESOF conference available to everyone. These sessions address a broad range of topics and issues that are relevant to Europe’s scientific community, including science for policy-related discussions. Sessions that will be of particular interest to scientists who want to start engaging with policy include: SS2.23 Giving and Taking Scientific Advice: Mind the Gap, SS1.35 Science Policy Career Paths: From lab to legislation, and SS1.28 Can We Make Informed Decisions Without Risk Know-How. To watch these sessions and many others, you can [gain access here](https://events.elevent.ly/esof) and search sessions using the calendar function on the top right-hand corner of the screen.
