Learn about the science-policy related events and opportunities in Europe and explore key resources!
Issue 54, August 2025

Dear EGU Expert,

The last Newsletter of this summer provides our readers with the fresh GeoLog post on the Anti-Autocracy Handbook, and announce the open call for the members of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change. It also features interesting events in the science-policy interface: the Think2030 Dialogue in Denmark and the EuSPRI Mission-Oriented Science-Policy Dialogues Training for Early-Career Professionals.

If you have any further questions or comments about the policy resources and opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, please get in touch!

Best wishes,

THE ACADEMIC PRACTICE OF RESISTANCE: LEARN HOW IN OUR LATEST BLOG POST

Credit: Grace Shephard (Source)

In June, an international team of researchers, led by psychologist and disinformation expert Stephan Lewandowsky published "The Anti-Autocracy Handbook: A Scholars' Guide to Navigating Democratic Backsliding" as a call for collective defence of democracy, truth, and academic freedom in the face of authoritarianism. The handbook elaborates on the strategies of authoritarian regimes' attacks on science. Aiming to guide scholars on how to navigate these challenges, it also sets out a framework for action based on personal risk level — low, medium, high, or extreme.

This month, on the EGU’s official blog, GeoLog our Science for Policy Officer, Zsanett Gréta Papp summarised the Anti-Autocracy Handbook and shared her insights about it for the geoscience community. The post is an important reminder of the need to protect the critical interface between science and policy in tough times.

If you need inspiration on this topic, you can read the Handbook here, and Zsanett’s blog post here.

APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE EUROPEAN SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY BOARD ON CLIMATE CHANGE

The European Environment Agency (EEA) is seeking fifteen independent scientific experts to serve on the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change for its second term between 2026–2030.

The Board provides EU institutions with evidence-based advice on EU climate policy, assesses progress at the EU level towards climate goals, and reviews the consistency of EU measures with the European Climate Law. It also collaborates closely with the scientific community, national advisory bodies, and a wide range of stakeholders to share knowledge and raise awareness on climate change and its implications.

Applicants should be EU nationals, hold a PhD (or equivalent) in an area relevant to climate science, and have at least 10 years of professional experience. The selection will ensure scientific excellence, interdisciplinarity, and diversity across gender and EU nation states.

REGISTER FOR THE THINK2030 DIALOGUE IN DENMARK

As part of the Think2030 series, a multi-stakeholder forum that provides science-based policy recommendations for a more sustainable Europe, the Think2030 Dialogue Denmark will convene European decision-makers, businesses, policy experts and civil society leaders on 29 September 2025 in Copenhagen. The conference will explore how the EU can reinforce its climate leadership in a shifting geopolitical landscape.

The conference will feature high-level keynotes, plenary sessions, as well as a series of breakout science and policy sessions for more in-depth policy discussions. These sessions will focus on topics including the role of agriculture in the post-2030 climate architecture, the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal, the challenge of financing the green transition, and the role of energy reform in improving EU competitiveness.

EUSPRI MISSION-ORIENTED SCIENCE-POLICY DIALOGUES TRAINING FOR EARLY-CAREER PROFESSIONALS

The European Forum for Studies of Policies for Research and Innovation (Eu-SPRI Forum) has announced their second training named Mission-Oriented Science-Policy Dialogues. It is tailored for early-career researchers and policymakers who are interested in Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) challenges.

This training offers three online pre-sessions on 2, 9, and 16 December 2025 and an intensive in-person workshop week in Vienna between 27–30 January 2026. It aims to build participants’ practical skills in evidence-informed policymaking, enhance their understanding of STI policy dynamics, and support the co-development of policy ideas addressing real societal challenges, while expanding networks across the science–policy interface.

If you are an early-career researcher or a policy professional who is interested to delve into the science-policy interface, you can learn more and apply here by 25 August 2025.
