[EGU SCIENCE FOR POLICY] NEWSLETTER - OCTOBER 2025 ================================================== Dear EGU Expert, We're once again offering our readers opportunities and resources to dive into science for policy! This month's newsletter announces the first output (https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14770-European-climate-resilience-and-risk-management-integrated-framework/F3631881_en) of our Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force, as well as the call for Chapter Scientists (https://www.ictp.it/opportunity/ipcc-ar7-chapter-scientists) for the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). It also features the ERC-STOA science-policy event (https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/events/research-policy-shaping-sustainable-and-competitive-europe) in Brussels, and the brand new report "Europe's environment 2025" (https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/europe-environment-2025) by the European Environment Agency. If you have any further questions or comments about the policy resources and opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, don't hesitate to get in touch (https://www.egu.eu/structure/union-office/)! Best wishes, Science for Policy Team THE FIRST OUTPUT OF THE CLIMATE HAZARD AND RISK TASK FORCE IS HERE! ------------------------------------------------------------------- We’re proud to share that the EGU Climate Hazard and Risk Task Force (https://www.egu.eu/policy/climate-hazard-and-risk/) has published their first output! The Task Force, formed in May 2025, responded to the public consultation on the initiative "European climate resilience and risk management" (https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14770-European-climate-resilience-and-risk-management-integrated-framework_en). This consultation sought to address knowledge and evidence gaps in areas such as climate risk assessments, emerging socio-economic trends, and technological innovation. The initiative will establish an integrated framework to help EU countries tackle these challenges. To support this goal, the Task Force put forward seven key recommendations grounded in the latest scientific evidence. This marks an important step in strengthening science-based input to the ongoing discussions in the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on a future climate risk assessment framework. Read it here (https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/14770-European-climate-resilience-and-risk-management-integrated-framework/F3631881_en)! IPCC CALL FOR CHAPTER SCIENTISTS FOR THE AR7 -------------------------------------------- The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (https://www.ipcc.ch/) (IPCC) is in the process of preparing its Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The IPCC Working Groups are seeking Chapter Scientists to assist the author team of a chapter in the Report. The potential tasks include directly assisting the Coordinating Lead Authors (CLAs) with meetings and literature review, supporting the report compilation process, and improving chapters. This is an opportunity exclusively for early-career researchers from developing countries and countries in economic transition (https://apps.ipcc.ch/eventmanager/documents/81/240720230155-INF.%202,%20Rev.1%20-%20Guidance%20on%20Developed%20and%20DC%20countries.pdf). Successful applicants will need to demonstrate that they can commit for a minimum of 48 months from November 2025. If you are an early-career researcher who is motivated to get involved with the IPCC process, be quick to read more and apply (https://www.ictp.it/opportunity/ipcc-ar7-chapter-scientists) by October 18! FOLLOW THE EVENT: FROM SCIENCE TO POLICY, SHAPING A SUSTAINABLE AND COMPETITIVE EUROPE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The European Research Council (https://erc.europa.eu/homepage) (ERC) and the European Parliament's Panel for the Future of Science and Technology (https://www.europarl.europa.eu/stoa/en/about/stoa-network) (STOA) are holding a joint event "From Science to Policy, Shaping a Sustainable and Competitive Europe" on November 12 in Brussels. In this event, researchers and key stakeholders will discuss the essential conditions that enable fair and inclusive green transitions and the Clean Industrial Deal, while boosting competitiveness and ensuring energy affordability for all. Sessions will focus on rethinking growth and prosperity, clean and sustainable energy, and water resilience. The event builds on an ERC report (https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/news/how-erc-frontier-research-supports-transformative-change) showcasing pioneering projects that address the urgent transformations needed to tackle climate change and rising social inequality. If you are interested, you can see the programme and the web streaming link here (https://erc.europa.eu/news-events/events/research-policy-shaping-sustainable-and-competitive-europe). THE EEA REPORT "EUROPE'S ENVIRONMENT 2025" IS OUT ------------------------------------------------- As a part of its mandate, the European Environment Agency (https://www.eea.europa.eu/) (EEA) publishes a state of the environment report every five years. On September 29, the agency published the latest of these reports, Europe's environment 2025. It is a comprehensive and cross-cutting assessment on environment, climate and sustainability in Europe based on data from 38 countries. The report stresses that significant progress has been made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution and increasing waste recycling and resource efficiency over the past 10-15 years. Yet, it also underlines that the nature of Europe continues to face degradation, overexploitation and biodiversity loss. According to the report, protecting natural resources, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and reducing pollution will build the resilience of vital societal functions such as food security, drinking water and flood defences. The report urges stepping up implementation of policies and longer-term sustainability-enabling actions already agreed to under the European Green Deal. If you want to think about how your work can contribute to the current pressing needs of Europe's environment, check out this significant report here (https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/europe-environment-2025). --------- ©2025 European Geosciences Union.
