DESCRIPTION:
The polar regions play a critical role in the global climat
e system and are critical for understanding ice sheet dynamics and sea lev
el changes. Currently\, the continental ice sheets on Antarctica and Green
land are losing mass and sea ice concentrations in the Arctic Ocean are de
clining and the ocean waters warming. This session will explore the polar
climate history with views from both poles and perspectives from the dista
nt past in the Paleogene to more recent changes during the last glacial cy
cle and Holocene\, To address this topic\, we have selected two guest talk
s:

Peter Bijl (Utrecht University) - Long-term history of the Anta
rctic Circumpolar Current

Heike Zimmermann (Geological Survey of D
enmark and Greenland) – Unlocking the seafloor’s genetic archive

This webinar is part of a special series celebrating 20 years of Climat
e of the Past\, an interactive journal of the European Geosciences Union.<
