Louis Néel

Louis Néel shared the 1970 Nobel Prize in Physics for his fundamental research and discoveries concerning antiferromagnetism. One of Néels many peripheral interests was the application of his theoretical models of ferromagnetism to the natural magnetization of rocks and minerals. This had a dominating influence on the development, through the last quarter century, of the theory of rock and palaeomagnetism, especially concerning self-reversal mechanisms.
