Welcome to the September newsletter of the EGU Energy, Resources, and the Environment Division!

This month: the call for session proposal for EGU27 is closing on September 23, help us shape the ERE programme, have a look at the new Geoscience & Society division and check out the new Geopanels format. We also share different opportunities to stay engaged throughout the year, including our next campfire, EGU's autumn workshops series and the open call for ERE EDI officer position.

Getting ready for EGU 27 

The call for session proposals for 2027 EGU General Assembly is open until 23 September 2026.

We invite you to contribute to the ERE and EGU program by proposing an oral, PICO or poster session. Please see the provisional programme for current session proposals and to upload your own proposal. You can suggest sessions with conveners in your preferred programme group, ITS, Short Courses, and Geopanels. 

Prior to proposing a session, we strongly encourage you to review the guidelines. We also encourage you check out the list of sessions already proposed in the submission platform and reach out to colleagues to form a wider session if the topics are similar.

New Geopanels format

This year Union symposia and Great Debate are regrouped and now called Geopanels. These events are intended to be cutting-edge, focusing on current topics, and of interest to a broad range of the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. They can bring forward unresolved and highly debated research topics with an important broad scientific impact.

New Geoscience & Society division

The former Education and Outreach Sessions are now under the umbrella of the new division Geoscience & Society (GS), which aims to provide a space for presenting and discussing research focused on the relationship between geoscience and society.  Its scope is any and all curiosity-driven inquiry into society’s relationship with geoscience (e.g. policy, science history and philosophy, ethics, citizen science, influence on culture, impacts) and research to define best practice in education and communication activities.

Supported by the EGU Special Activity Fund, FCC brings subsurface and climate science to the public through interactive outreach activities across Europe.

Numerical and machine learning modeling for geological CO₂ sequestration at an intermediate scale

How can we bridge the gap between centimeter-scale laboratory experiments and field-scale geological CO₂ storage? Dario Sciandra will present a novel meter-scale experimental and modeling framework combining multiphase-flow simulations and machine learning to characterize reservoir–caprock systems and identify the most informative observations for CO₂ storage monitoring.

Why not apply to join one of the EGU’s six FREE workshop series’ for 2026?! These online training workshops can help you to develop new skills and build your confidence in a range of subjects, and are led by professionals who specialise in science communication, science for policy, outreach or career development.

The EGU Council recently approved the opening for a new Division level  EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity) Officer position at their February 2026 meeting. This voluntary position provides the opportunity for exchange at the Division level with the workings of the EGU-EDI Committee. The goal is to nurture a two-way exchange focussed on EDI initiatives that can be fostered between the ERE Division level and the EGU EDI Committee.

The selected Division EDI Officer will join a team of volunteers from other Divisions, to strengthen and raise awareness of EDI activities within the Union.

What is the role of a Division EDI Officer? 

Division EDI Officers are the point of contact for Division members to collect feedback and ideas on EDI initiatives. They will form a bridge between the Division and the EDI Committee by supporting EDI initiatives throughout the year, particularly during the General Assembly (e.g., supporting activities at the EGU EDI booth, attending EDI networking events), and by sharing information and activities from the EDI Committee with their Division President to be shared with the Division Membership. Division EDI Officers will discuss their Division-level initiatives with the Division president and the EDI Committee to ensure efficient communication and coordination in order to avoid duplication of efforts. Division EDI officers will be invited to participate in annual Division meetings generally held during the General Assembly in Vienna.

Previous engagement in EDI activities is not required for this voluntary position, but applicants should be aware of the diverse EDI-related issues in scientific communities.
