Tunnelling through the mountains

From landslide warnings to engineering; reflecting on the state of the ground beneath our feet

This July marked the 60th anniversary of the construction of the tunnel underneath Mont Blanc, an incredible achievement of rock physics and engineering in it's day, that continues to reveal new discoveries as a living lab today, as Asmae Ourkiya discovered in this blog post. William Veniss from GfGD discussed the importance of building early warning systems from the ground up in this blog on the current stage of the Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) initiative, stating "In many systems, the default hazard maps and models are built using national-scale or satellite-derived datasets. These are critical tools, but for hazards such as landslides and floods, small-scale changes in geology, topography, vegetation, or soil conditions can dramatically alter the hazard experienced and the local impacts. Without incorporating local physical and environmental data... early warnings based on coarser-scale information may be inaccurate, untimely, or produce false alarms for a large proportion of those they aim to serve." And don't miss out on this discussion of your career options, both inside and out of academia in our recent EGUwebinar!

Now is also the time for you to nominate the next Union President, General Secretary, Division Presidents and Early Career Scientist Representative, by the 3 September - did you know you can even nominate yourself? And don't miss out on proposing a session for EGU26! Head over to the EGU26 website to read the Convener Guidelines and submit your session by 13:00 CEST 16 September 2025.

DEADLINES
SCIENCE FOR POLICY

Science-Policy Hangouts

The EGU Science-Policy Hangout sessions bring together those working at the science-policy interface each month for an informal exchange. Each session includes a short presentation by the guest speaker followed by an open discussion.

You can now register for our next #Science4Policy Hangout which will be at 14:00 CEST on Monday 4 August.

Science for Policy Newsletter

In our monthly Science for Policy Newsletter, we share policy-related opportunities and resources for science community. This month’s newsletter announces the BioAgora inaugural Science-Policy Interface Dialogue Workshop that is taking place in early October, and the new round of European Commission Bluebook Traineeship applications that run until the end of August.

It also features a new useful practical guide for sharing scientific evidence with policymakers by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) as well as the EU Climate Law Amendment Proposal - the latest big achievement of the Science for Policy community.

JOURNAL WATCH
Schematic cross-section of the footwall damage zone of the studied carbonate fault zones, in which the main structural domains are highlighted. Names of representative samples are reported for the single domains. The black square represents the 1 cm2 selected image for subsequent digital analysis. Further information available in the paper.

"The observed increase in permeability with porosity in fault breccias suggests that fractured carbonate formations could serve as effective migration pathways for injected CO2, emphasising the need for careful reservoir characterisation to assess caprock integrity and leakage risks."

ANNOUNCEMENTS

EGU announces the recipients of the 2025 Field Schools for Teachers and Geoscience Education Event grants

EGU's Education Committee has awarded four grants to recipients from Greece, Spain, France and Morocco to provide financial assistance to initiatives that promote geoscience learning at various educational levels. The initiatives will all run during the autumn 2025.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

EGUwebinar: Careers inside and outside of academia

What are your career options when you have finished your studies? How do you find employment, in research or exploring new areas? Watch this EGUwebinar hosted by Veronica Peverelli on our YouTube channel to learn more!

UPCOMING DATES

EGU Science for Policy Hangout

Come virtually network with those working at the science-policy interface! Register for our next #Sci4Pol Hangout at 14:00 CEST on Monday 4 August.

Apply to evaluate EGU's Science Communication workshops!

EGU's Outreach Committee are seeking an evaluator to develop an evaluation framework for the online workshops in science communication, outreach and public engagement, EGU delivers to our members. With a total budget of €6000 (incl VAT) for all three workshops to be assessed, applications are welcomed by 11 August.

EGUwebinar: Climate of the Past 20th Anniversary: Greenhouse gases and climate sensitivity

Past natural variations in climate and atmospheric greenhouse gases can be used to estimate Earth’s climate sensitivity, the most important parameter in projecting future anthropogenic warming. As part of a special series celebrating 20 years of EGU journal 'Climate of the Past', join this EGUwebinar at 17:00CEST, 10 Sept to hear leaders in the field address these ideas. Register here today.
