Interconnected systems in science

The value of connection in science is exemplified through data and community.

As winter draws close here in the northern hemisphere, our thoughts at EGU have turned to the ways that we are all interconnected, not only through science, but through community. Guest author Bob Bateman, creator of the 'EarthquakeNearMe' initative talks about how people are seeking connection with science, even in moments of risk. "People don’t search for “moment tensor solutions.” They search for “earthquake near me.” This linguistic clue tells us something powerful:  the public doesn’t want less science, they want science that feels close." As our GeoTalk interviewee this month, author and geoscientist Anjana Khatwa also says "Despite being the fundamental basis upon which all life systems depend, our emotional engagement with rock in the western world remains cold and distant... To counter this narrative, I went in search of how ancient knowledge systems (including from my own South Asian culture) could help to reframe our relationship with rock." And guest author and postdoctoral researcher Lisa Gourdon-Grünewaldt shared the importance of recognising and celebrating the International Day of LGBTQIA+ in STEM. But connection doesn't just come from humanity - Asmae Ourkiya shared the revolutionary impact the new UNESCO World Soil Health Index (WSHI) is having by connecting global data about soils. EGU Editorial Manager Eduardo Queiroz Alves also championed another way of connecting your science - using preprints as a way to encourage collaboration and make data more discoverable.

If you are looking to build connection with gift giving this season, don't miss out on EGU's top 5 gifts for geoscientists ideas for 2025! Also the EGU26 call for abstracts is now open - you have until 13:00CET, 15 January 2026 to submit your abstract. You can also now apply to support your community at EGU26 by volunteering to our Peer Support programme that helps General Assembly novices navigate the meeting! Apply to take part by 31 March 2026.

DEADLINES
SCIENCE FOR POLICY

Invite policymakers to your EGU26 session

To help promote knowledge exchange and a culture of evidence-informed policymaking, EGU is offering free EGU26 registration (either on-site or virtual) and abstract submission procedure to European policymakers. This will enable policymakers to attend scientific sessions that are relevant to the legislation that they are working on, enable them to connect with the research community, share their policy work, and support future opportunities for science-policy engagement.

Catch up on recent EGU Policy webinars

The EGUwebinar, 'Beyond Scicomm 101: How To Connect With Policymakers' featured Mario Scharfbillig from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, presented the report on Values and Identities: A policymaker's guide to explore the deep underpinnings of what people want, and how this is relevant to presenting research findings that resonate with the audience. For those who missed it, the webinar is available here.

Looking to brush up on your Science for Policy skills? Don't miss any of our special EGUwebinars on this topic by keeping an eye on the EGU Science for Policy playlist on YouTube. All new Science for Policy webinars will be added to this list as they are uploaded.

JOURNAL WATCH

Credit: Andrew Sole on imaggeo.egu.eu

"Freshwater runoff from the Greenland Ice Sheet significantly influenced the chemical composition of coastal waters along west Greenland, particularly in Disko Bay and at the mouth of the Nassuttooq Fjord. In the Disko Bay area, Greenland Ice Sheet-derived freshwater input replenished macronutrients in the photic zone, stimulating primary productivity and creating an important sink for CO2 long into the summer season."
