What does it take to foster an inclusive geoscience community?

More support for women, early career scientists, educators and other under-represented groups

The geoscience community has long been recognized as one of the least diverse scientific fields. This month, EGU spoke to researchers about the exclusionary practices contributing to the low retention rate of minority groups within the geosciences, and to understand what needs to be done to usher in change.

Robyn Pickering and Rivoningo Khosa discuss the geological period that no one talks about: menstruation in the field, and why this silence must be broken. Geophysicist Fabio Crameri reflects on the struggles of being a parent or caregiver in academia, while EGU’s new Union-level Early Career Scientist Representative David Fernández-Blanco shares his plans to better support early career researchers.

We also hear from members of EGU’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee about their survey on workplace experiences of geoscientists from different backgrounds. And EGU’s Education Committee shares ways to bring science to educators and encourages you to get involved!
