EGU's 2022 Science-Policy Pairing Scheme is now open for applications

Dear EGU Expert,

This month’s EGU Science for Policy Newsletter highlights opportunities for you to connect with policymakers and those working on the science-policy interface. The EGU announces the 2022 incarnation of the Science-Policy Pairing Scheme (apply now!), the EGU and the JRC offer virtual science-policy networking opportunities, and Frontiers Policy Labs provides personal insights from distinguished policymakers.

If you have any further questions or comments about the policy opportunities that exist for scientists in Europe, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via policy@egu.eu or on Twitter using @Chl0e_Hill.

Have a fantastic summer,
Chloe Hill, EGU Policy Manager

The EGU is pleased to announce that we will once again sponsor a scientist to work alongside a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for one week. This year’s Pairing Scheme will be with Norbert Lins, an MEP representing Germany and the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats). He is Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Co-Chair of the Biodiversity Working Group of the European Parliament Intergroup on Climate Change, Biodiversity and Sustainable Development.

The application period for the EGU’s 2022 Science for Policy Pairing Scheme is now open! You can read more about the Pairing Scheme here and submit your application here until 12 September 2022.

EGU’s Science for Policy Hangouts

Earlier this month, EGU hosted its first Science for Policy Hangout that allowed those working on the science-policy interface, and those who are interested in learning more about it, to connect and discuss relevant issues. Key themes that were discussed included the challenges scientists face when engaging with policy, how the EGU can better support scientists, and upcoming science-policy activities and initiatives.

The EGU’s Science for Policy Hangouts are a great way to have your science-policy questions answered and network with those engaging in geoscience-relevant policy issues. You can register for the next Hangout that will be hosted at 16:30 CEST on 1 September 2022 here.

The Joint Research Centre’s Knowledge4Policy Platform

The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s Knowledge4Policy Platform aims to bridge the science-policy gap by bringing evidence for policy, direct from scientists to policymakers, across Europe. It aims to mobilise people and resources to “create, curate, make sense of and use knowledge to inform policymaking across Europe”.

It also features regular posts on science for policy-related topics such as,
- Can and should science-for-policy systems be mapped and measured?
- 5 ways for scientific institutions to support European policymaking and
- What about the governance of evidence-informed policymaking?

You can make your own Knowledge4Policy Platform profile here and start connecting with others who are working on the science-policy interface today!

Frontiers Policy Labs

Frontiers has recently launched Policy Labs, an initiative that seeks to strengthen the connection between robust scientific research and informed policymaking. It promotes open, trustworthy, and accessible science that enables more holistic decision-making supported by evidence. The platform has a number of sections (such as Conversations, Commentaries, and a Podcast) that encourage scientists to listen, learn, and join the debate.

Frontiers Policy Labs has also recently released Hearing Our Policymakers’ Expectations, a set of interviews with distinguished policymakers. These interviews dive into complex science-advice topics and aim to uncover what policymakers need from the scientific community to be able to more effectively assimilate evidence.
