In response to member feedback, the EGU Council has established a working group whose focus will be on supporting evidence-informed policy and highlighting policy-relevant research conducted by EGU members. The Working Group had its first meeting earlier this month and will be sharing updates and activities via this newsletter and the policy section of the EGU’s website.

The 2020/2021 EGU Science-Policy Pairing Scheme is currently underway with the selected EGU member, Renée Bichler, and Member of the European Parliament Maria Spyraki. Due to the current COVID restrictions, the 2020/21 pairing scheme is being hosted virtually. Bichler will continue to assist Spyraki and her team on a part-time basis in the coming weeks and present on her experience during the EGU General Assembly 2021 and via a GeoPolicy blog post.

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre is launching a training-of-trainers programme for researchers and facilitators from EU countries. The training-of-trainers programme will provide 20 ‘local trainers’ with a 2-day professional training course on Evidence for Policy, giving them insights into how they can more effectively train researchers to effectively inform the design of public policies and debates. The application deadline is 26 February 2021.

Science for policy ecosystems in Europe

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) is running a survey targeting those with experience working at the science-policy interface. This survey aims to gain a better understanding of science for policy ecosystems across Europe, build a community of professionals that are involved in these ecosystems, and facilitate capacity-building projects that strengthen evidence-informed policymaking. The JRC is also running a workshop series with people working at the science-policy interface to further develop their knowledge on Europe’s science for policy ecosystems.

Global Network for Geoscience and Society: an information-gathering survey

The newly established Global Network for Geoscience and Society (GNGS) aims to provide an opportunity for people across the globe to share their geoscientific knowledge and experience and gain assistance from others to advance local and regional resilience and sustainability. It will encompass not only science for policy initiatives, but also education, science communication, and community projects. The GNGS is asking for feedback from individuals and organisations via a survey regarding existing initiatives and current gaps that need to be bridged.
