The 2010 Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) Award is awarded to Jacqueline Owen for the poster entitled:

The use of magmatic water to reconstruct palaeo-ice thicknesses during subglacial rhyolitic eruptions (Owen, J.; Tuffen, H.; McGarvie, D.; Pinkerton, H.; Wilson, L.).

Resumé:

Jacqueline Owen is a PhD student working in the Environmental Geoscience theme of the Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University in the UK. She is supervised by Hugh Tuffen, Dave McGarvie, Harry Pinkerton and Lionel Wilson. Her work focuses on the role of volatiles in the behaviour of subglacial rhyolitic volcanoes in Iceland. An important control is the ice thickness at the time of eruption, which can be estimated using volatile data. Her poster presents the results of applying a water degassing model to the effusive subglacial rhyolitic volcano Bláhnúkur (part of the Torfajökull complex in southern Iceland) to reconstruct the palaeo-ice thickness at the time of eruption.
