The 2014 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Angelica Tarpanelli for the poster/PICO entitled:

River discharge estimation by using remote sensing data in absence of bathymerty: The Po river case study (Tarpanelli, A.; Barbetta, S.; Brocca, L.; Lacava, T.; Faruolo, M.; Moramarco, T.)

Angelica Tarpanelli has been employed at the Research Institute of Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI), National Research Council (CNR), Perugia (Italy) since 2006 and she is a Researcher since 2012. Her main research activities include hydraulic risk assessment, design flood estimation and use of remote sensing for hydrological and hydraulic applications. In January 2014 she received the PhD degree at University of Perugia: the title of the thesis is “Remote sensing for hydraulic applications in small-medium basins”. The awarded poster details some of the key outcomes from her PhD research. Specifically, a method that combines multiple satellite sensors, e.g. Moderate Imaging Resolution Spectroradiometer, MODIS and RA-2 radar altimeter, is proposed for retrieving hydraulic variables, such as flow velocity, water level, river cross section width, involved in the estimation of river discharge in natural channels. For ungauged sites, the river cross section flow area is assessed considering the channel bathymetry simulated by maximization of entropy.
