INRAE

The Institut national de recherche pour l’agriculture, l’alimentation et l’environnement (INRAE) is a public research establishment under the dual authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Research.

It is a major player in research and innovation, created on January 1, 2020. A finalized research institute resulting from the merger between Inra and Irstea, INRAE brings together a community of 12,000 people, with 268 research, service and experimental units, located in 18 centers throughout France.

The institute ranks among the world leaders in agricultural and food sciences, plant and animal sciences, and 11th worldwide in ecology-environment. Faced with population growth, climate change, resource scarcity and declining biodiversity, INRAE is building solutions for multi-performance agriculture, quality food and sustainable management of resources and ecosystems.

Job description

INRAE and the instute of Environmental Geosciences are offering a Tenure-Track Junior Professor Chairs Alpine cryospheric hydrology (https://jobs.inrae.fr/en/tenure-track/tenure-track-junior-professor-chairs/cpj24-aqua-1) at IGE (https://www.ige-grenoble.fr/). After a pre-tenure contract for three years with funding and related resources of 335000€, and an assessment, it will offer you the opportunity to obtain full tenure as a Research Director (DR2).

The functioning and hydrological regime of Alpine hydrosystems play a decisive role in structuring numerous ecosystems and human activities along the mountain-plain continuum. They are also particularly sensitive to climate variability, and will continue to be strongly modified by ongoing climate disruption, particularly due to changes in the cryosphere, which plays a central role in regulating hydrological regimes (volume, seasonality, temperature). The impacts of changes in hydrological and thermal regimes, aquatic communities and uses remain poorly quantified along the mountain-plain continuum. In particular, the sensitivity of low-water levels to variations in snow-glacial stocks, a major environmental and socio-economic issue, is virtually unknown in France. Against this backdrop, the objectives of this project will be to assess the impact of changes in hydrological systems in the Alpine region: monthly/annual accumulations; snow stocks; seasonality; temperature; alternation of snow cover; sediment transport during dry/warm winter periods; flows and storage within the hydrological cycle; characterization of hydrometeorological extremes; characterization of flood types in mountain areas. To do this, we will combine various analysis and modeling techniques, including hydrological modeling, projecti
