The 2017 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Raphael Weber for the poster/PICO entitled:

Shaded trees save their carbon (Weber, R.; Hoch, G.)

I am a PhD student at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel, Switzerland. My research focuses on the dynamics of carbon storage in trees, consisting mainly of starch and free sugars. Under the supervision of PD Dr. Günter Hoch, I test the possibility of carbon reserve formation in trees against pronounced sink demands through light deprivation. The poster presents a novel visualization of carbon partitioning between storage and growth, which enables to understand the way trees react to carbon shortage or excessive carbon supply – as it might happen during drought or increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations.
