Rute Santos is a PhD student in the Physics Department at the University of Coimbra, Portugal. She is conducting her research under the supervision of Prof. Alexandra Pais from CITEUC and Prof. João Cardoso from LIBPhys. Rute’s research primarily focuses on studying the impact of Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) on the power grid and gas pipeline over the Portugal mainland territory. Her work involves enhancing GIC modeling in these systems, developing instrumentation to measure these currents, and also working on a GIC forecast tool.
During the EGU 2023 conference, Rute presented her findings on improving GIC calculations by considering shield wires in the power grid model.
