The 2019 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Andrew Bennett for the poster/PICO entitled:

A process network based approach to model intercomparison using SUMMA ensembles (Bennett, A.; Nijssen, B.; Clark, M.; Nearing, G.)

Andrew Bennett is a PhD student at the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. His research focuses on using information theory to compare and evaluate different hydrologic modeling approaches. The poster presented at EGU 2019 showed results comparing an ensemble of 289 different modeling approaches to simulate turbulent heat fluxes. The results indicate that physically based modeling approaches performed worse than a data driven approach, even though it tended to represent the underlying physics in a much more correct way. This work showed that there can be a large tradeoff in performance and physical accuracy for different modeling approaches.
