Jane Qiu and Jane Palmer awarded EGU Science Journalism Fellowship Press release 18 January 2017 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named journalists Jane Qiu and Jane Palmer as the winners of its 2017 Science Journalism Fellowship. The support will allow Qiu to report on glaciers and fjord ecosystems in Svalbard, while Palmer will travel to Peru to find out more about the threat posed by slow-moving landslides. Read more

EGU Galileo Conference programme: call for proposals 9 January 2017 The EGU is now accepting proposals for Galileo conferences to take place in March 2018 to February 2019. The meetings address well-focused cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research, with two conferences this year focusing on ‘Geoscience for understanding habitability in the Solar System and beyond’ and ‘From process to signal – advancing environmental seismology’. Any EGU member may propose to organise a Galileo Conference until 28 February 2017. Read more

Applications open for EGU Public Engagement Grants 15 November 2016 The EGU is launching the second edition of its grant scheme to celebrate and recognise excellent science communication in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The two applicants that are judged to have the most innovative and effective initiative, will be awarded a grant of €1000 each to help further develop the idea and put it into practice. Earthquakes: what’s happening in central Italy? 3 November 2016 On Sunday 30 October 2016 at 7:40 am local time, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit central Italy near Norcia. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicentre was at 42.84 N, 13.11 E at a depth of about 10 km. Earlier today, another strong (magnitude 4.8), shallow earthquake hit the same area. Read more
