EGU’s reaction to US decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement Press release 2 June 2017 Yesterday, the President of the United States announced the country would be withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement. The European Geosciences Union (EGU) strongly opposes this decision. The overwhelming scientific consensus on is that climate is changing as a consequence of human activity, and that reducing greenhouse-gas emissions is vital to limit global warming and lower the risk of dangerous climate impacts. First AOGS–EGU Joint Conference: New Dimensions for Natural Hazards in Asia 22 May 2017 The first AOGS-EGU joint conference will take place from 4 to 8 February 2018 in the Philippines. It will bring together students, early career and established scientists from all areas of the globe to discuss current advances in knowledge and new perspectives relevant to natural hazards in the Asian region. Flat Antarctica – Land height could help explain why Antarctica is warming slower than the Arctic Press release 18 May 2017 Temperatures in the Arctic are increasing twice as fast as in the rest of the globe, while the Antarctic is warming at a much slower rate. A new study published in Earth System Dynamics, a journal of the European Geosciences Union, shows that land height could be a “game changer” when it comes to explaining why temperatures are rising at such different rates in the two regions. EGU journals: celebrations and growth 16 May 2017 The 17 EGU–Copernicus peer-reviewed open-access journals experienced significant growth in 2016. We published over 3300 final-revised papers, corresponding to some 53,500 pages, a growth of about 10% compared to the previous year. These papers were downloaded over 645,000 times. Read more

Thank you for making the EGU 2017 General Assembly a success 3 May 2017 Last week (23–28 April), the EGU had the pleasure to host 14,500 participants at the EGU 2017 General Assembly in Vienna. This was a record-breaking meeting, with close to 17,500 oral, poster and PICO presentations, and over 1000 sessions and side events. For making the meeting a success, the EGU would like to thank all participants, as well as everyone involved in the organisation of the meeting: conveners, members of the EGU Programme Committee, Copernicus Meetings, conference assistants, and ACV and EGU office staff. Coral reefs struggle to keep up with rising seas, leave coastal communities at risk Press release 20 April 2017 In the first ecosystem-wide study of changing sea depths at five large coral reef tracts in Florida, the Caribbean and Hawai’i, researchers found the sea floor is eroding in all five places, and the reefs cannot keep pace with sea level rise. As a result, coastal communities protected by the reefs are facing increased risks from storms, waves and erosion. The study, by a US Geological Survey team, is published today (20 April) in Biogeosciences, a journal of the European Geosciences Union. Read more

The meeting that provides an opportunity for journalists to hear about the latest research in the Earth and space sciences and to talk to scientists from all over the world. The press conference programme includes presentations on Cassini’s grand finale, food security, and screaming clouds, among other topics. EGU endorses March for Science 24 March 2017 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now an official supporter of the March for Science. This global movement will culminate with a march on Earth Day, April 22, 2017, in Washington DC. On the same day, hundreds of satellite marches will take place around the world, including in Vienna, the day before the EGU General Assembly starts in the Austrian capital. Read more

Editorial malpractice in two EGU journals (SOIL and SE) detected for one editor, others cleared 27 February 2017 EGU and Copernicus Publications recently detected a case of scientific malpractice by a topical editor of two of their journals, SOIL and Solid Earth (SE). EGU, Copernicus and the executive editors of the affected journals took prompt action by informing the community, and the editor has stepped down. We are now making data from editor and referee reports for the editor in question public, as well as for seven more soil scientists who have reviewed for EGU–Copernicus journals. The data reveal only one editor manipulated citations. Read more

Less snow and a shorter ski season in the Alps Press release 16 February 2017 After long-awaited snowfall in January, parts of the Alps are now covered with fresh powder and happy skiers. But the Swiss side of the iconic mountain range had the driest December since record-keeping began over 150 years ago, and 2016 was the third year in a row with scarce snow over the Christmas period. A study published today in The Cryosphere shows bare Alpine slopes could be a much more common sight in the future. Read more

Jane Qiu and Jane Palmer awarded EGU Science Journalism Fellowship Press release 18 January 2017 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named journalists Jane Qiu and Jane Palmer as the winners of its 2017 Science Journalism Fellowship. Earthquakes: what’s happening in central Italy? 3 November 2016 On Sunday 30 October 2016 at 7:40 am local time, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit central Italy near Norcia. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the epicentre was at 42.84 N, 13.11 E at a depth of about 10 km. Earlier today, another strong (magnitude 4.8), shallow earthquake hit the same area. Read more
