The Antarctica Factor: model uncertainties reveal upcoming sea-level risk Press release 14 February 2020 Sea-level rise due to ice loss in Antarctica could become a major risk for coastal protection even in the near term, scientists say. Air pollution in New York City linked to wildfires hundreds of miles away Press release 21 January 2020 A new study published in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics shows that air pollutants from the smoke of fires from as far as Canada and the southeastern U.S. traveled hundreds of miles and several days to reach Connecticut and New York City, where it caused significant increases in pollution concentrations. Fukushima: lessons learnt from an extraordinary case of soil decontamination Press release 12 December 2019 Following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, in March 2011, the Japanese authorities decided to carry out major decontamination works in the affected area, which covers more than 9,000 km2. On December 12, 2019, with most of this work having been completed, the scientific journal SOIL of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is publishing a synthesis of approximately sixty scientific publications that together provide an overview of the decontamination strategies used and their effectiveness, with a focus on radiocesium. One-third of recent global methane increase comes from tropical Africa Press release 11 December 2019 Concentrations of methane, a greenhouse gas about 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide, have risen steadily in Earth’s atmosphere since 2007. Although several potential explanations, including an increase in methane emissions from the tropics, could account for this upsurge, due to a lack of regional data scientists have been unable to pinpoint the source. Now a study published in the European Geosciences Union (EGU) journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics uses satellite data to determine that one-third of the global increase originates in Africa’s tropics. Burgundy wine grapes tell climate story, show warming accelerated in past 30 years Press release 29 August 2019 A newly published series of dates of grape harvest covering the past 664 years is the latest line of evidence confirming how unusual the climate of the past 30 years has been. The record shows wine grapes in Burgundy, eastern France, have been picked 13 days earlier on average since 1988 than they were in the previous six centuries, pointing to the region’s hotter and drier climate in recent years. The results are now published in Climate of the Past. Read more

Weather and Climate Dynamics is an open-access, two-stage journal with open review, following the model of other EGU journals, and is published by Copernicus Publications. Read more
Open letter to funding agencies regarding presentations at EGU meetings 20 August 2019 The EGU has issued an open letter to funding agencies and evaluation committees with information on the assessment of presentations given at its scientific meetings. The letter details the three presentation types given at EGU General Assembly and states that the selection of the type of presentation is not based on any evaluation of the scientific value of the contribution. As highlighted in a previous EGU statement, the letter also emphasises that there is no distinction regarding the standing, quality or prestige of oral, poster, or PICO presentations. Read more
New study: Fracking prompts global spike in atmospheric methane Press release 14 August 2019 As methane concentrations increase in the Earth’s atmosphere, chemical fingerprints point to a probable source: shale oil and gas, according to new Cornell University research published today in Biogeosciences, a journal of the European Geosciences Union.
