EGU and EFG establish dialogue with policy makers on how the geosciences can help overcome Europe’s societal challenges 28 September 2018 On 26 September 2018, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) and the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) have jointly convened the ‘Horizon Geoscience: overcoming societal challenges, creating change’ dinner debate. Held at the Royal Academy of Belgium, the event has gathered nearly 80 policymakers from European institutions, media representatives, and geoscience professionals from different sectors and fields of expertise. EGU 2019 call for sessions: deadline approaching 3 September 2018 The call for session proposals for the EGU 2019 General Assembly is currently open. Until 6 September you can suggest new sessions with conveners and description, or you can propose modifications to current ones. Please note that, similarly to last year, the 6 September deadline also applies to short courses. The deadline to submit proposals for Union Symposia and Great Debates was 15 August. EGU raises €17,000 for carbon offsetting scheme, thanks to General Assembly participants 26 June 2018 For the first time, we gave participants at the annual EGU General Assembly the opportunity to offset the CO2 emissions resulting from their travel to and from Vienna. We are happy to report that, as a result of this initiative, we raised nearly €17,000 for a carbon offsetting scheme. Read more

Solid Earth website relaunched 16 April 2018 The website of the EGU/Copernicus open-access journal Solid Earth was relaunched with a new design during the EGU General Assembly last week. In addition, the former chief executive editor Fabrizio Storti stepped down. His successor is CharLotte Krawczyk who has been an executive editor since 2015. Read more

New EGU opportunity for early career scientists to be involved with policy 13 April 2018 European-based early career scientists (ECS) are invited to apply for the EGU’s ECS Policy Competition. The competition is open to all undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters/PhD) students and scientists who have received their highest degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) within the past seven years. The winner of the competition will receive a ticket to a Dinner Debate in Brussels on the evening of September 26, 2018. Read more
Atmospheric Measurement Techniques (AMT) celebrates its 10th anniversary 6 April 2018 In 2008, the EGU and Copernicus launched a new journal dedicated specifically to atmospheric measurement techniques. The EGU Publications Committee and the co-editors-in-chief will celebrate the 10th anniversary of AMT during an evening reception, open to all, at the EGU General Assembly 2018 in Vienna, taking place at the PICO spot 5a on Tuesday, 10 April at 19:00. EGU takes measures to reduce environmental impact of its General Assembly 13 March 2018 The EGU meeting, the largest geoscience conference in Europe, attracts over 14,000 attendees to Vienna, Austria every year. With such a large number of participants, many flying to the Austrian capital to attend, the meeting has a large environmental impact, which the EGU is attempting to reduce with a series of measures this year. Statement on scientific presentations at the EGU General Assembly 20 February 2018 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) stresses that all scientific presentations at its General Assembly have equal importance, independent of format. There is no distinction regarding the standing, quality or prestige of oral, poster, or PICO presentations. Our different presentation formats offer different ways to present research and obtain feedback. In all cases, a presenter is expected to deliver the main message of the research orally and discuss their results with other participants at the meeting. Read more

Submit your images to the EGU Imaggeo Photo Competition 15 January 2018 The ninth annual EGU photo competition opens on 15 January. Up until 15 February (note earlier deadline this year!), every participant pre-registered for the General Assembly can submit up three original photos and one moving image on any broad theme related to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. EGU journal processing charges to increase slightly in 2018 to compensate for inflation 11 December 2017 From 1 January 2018, the article processing charges (APCs) for all EGU journals will increase by 3%, following an EGU Council decision in October. In addition to covering the costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication and long-term archiving for existing journals, funds generated from the APCs also help support the launch of new EGU journals, allow EGU to offer financial support to authors unable to pay the APCs, and contribute to cover part of the EGU running costs. Annales Geophysicae to become an interactive journal 7 December 2017 Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO), published through Copernicus Publications, will transition into an interactive journal over the next few weeks. From 2018 on, all new submissions will undergo a two-stage process involving the scientific discussion forum ANGEO Discussions as the first stage and a final revised journal article publication in ANGEO as the second stage. The change means all 16 of EGU’s thematic journals (i.e., all but Advances in Geosciences, EGU’s journal for conference proceedings) will be interactive publications with public peer review. EGU Galileo Conference programme: call for proposals 1 December 2017 The EGU is now accepting proposals for Galileo Conferences, which aim to address well-focused cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research. The conferences are informal: the state-of-the-art is outlined in keynote talks designed to trigger in-depth discussion of important aspects of the conference topic. EGU members can propose to organise a Galileo Conference and apply for funding by the end of February 2018. Read more

Agung volcanic eruption: what’s going on in Indonesia 29 November 2017 After ongoing unrest at Agung, Indonesia, in late summer and early autumn, the volcano has recently begun a strong ash venting process, with incandescence visible at night in the summit. Applications open for EGU Public Engagement Grants 15 November 2017 The EGU is launching the third edition of its grant scheme to celebrate and recognise excellent science communication in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The two applicants who are judged to have the most innovative and effective initiative, will be awarded a grant of €1000 each to help further develop the idea and put it into practice, as well as a free General Assembly registration. The deadline for applications is 15 February. Read more
