ECS

Early Career Scientists represent a fundamental and vibrant part of the Tectonics and Structural Geology - TS community. This page is dedicated to supporting and connecting ECS within the division, providing information on opportunities, initiatives, and ways to engage with our activities. Through the ECS representatives, early career researchers can actively contribute to the life of the division, share ideas, and make their voices heard. Here you can stay up to date with our goals, events, and communication channels.

Who we are

Hannah Sophia Davies (TS ECS Rep)

Hannah is a Postdoctoral researcher at the Frei University Berlin. Her research focus is numerical modelling of Earth system processes, particularly in the intersection between tectonics and the Earth’s surface, and on the tectonics of the early Earth. Recently, she has been applying this approach to other rocky planets like Mars and Mercury.

Jean-Baptiste Koehl (EDI Officer)

Jean-Baptiste is a structural geologist–tectonicist using interdisciplinary datasets to reconstruct past plate tectonics. He is particularly interested in supercontinent cycles with an emphasis on orogens in seismic reflection data.

Alessandro Petroccia (Media Lead Officer)

Alessandro is a crystalline basement geologist currently working as a research fellow at the University of Côte d'Azur (Géoazur Research Institute in Nice, France). Alessandro's research focuses on orogenic chains with emphasis in investigating the interplay between deformation and metamorphic processes, fluid-rock interaction, and the tectonometamorphic evolution of polydeformed terranes, to unveil the processes responsible for the formation of orogens. Fabiola Caso (Media Officer)

Fabiola is a structural geologist, currently postdoctoral researcher in geodynamics at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Her research combines geological mapping with petro-structural analysis with particular interest on deciphering deformation within migmatitic rocks. She is currently working on geodynamic numerical modelling of subduction of continental lithosphere coupled with surfaces processes dynamics.

Yu Ren (Media Officer)

Yu is a marine geophysicist and postdoctoral researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany. His research combines fieldwork adventures with computational detective work to better understand magmatic, tectonic, and earthquake processes at active plate boundaries. He has been an active and motivated EGU member since 2022. Find him on LinkedIn.

Costantino Zuccari (Webmaster)

Costantino is a Post-Doc in structural geology at the University of Bologna (Italy). His past and present research activity points to the analysis of brittle and ductile deformation in multilayer successions and on absolute temporal constraints of tectonic events. Through the study of different areas, including the Alps, Cyclades and Oman Mountains, he integrates field and laboratory analyses to derive new constraints for multiscale structural purposes.

Annelotte Weert

Annelotte is a structural geologist and sedimentologist, currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Her research focuses on complex sedimentary reservoirs and aims to bridge geology with sustainable energy solutions, enhancing the energy transition.

Filippo Carboni

Filippo is a structural geologist with an interest in planetary geology. Currently, he is a Researcher at the University of Freiburg working on the characterization of planetary structures. He employs kinematic forward modelling and detailed structural mapping from remote sensing data. However, he cannot leave Earth, where he is active in Seismotectonics studies based on the integration of seismic reflection profile interpretation, InSAR, 3D and Elastic Dislocation modelling and field geology.

Lauretta Kaerger

Lauretta is a researcher at the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Combining structural geology with geomorphic, remote sensing, and geophysical methods, her research focuses on active tectonics to better constrain the earthquake hazard of her research areas and investigate its tectonic deformation.

Lourenço Steel Hart

Lourenço is a PhD student at the University of Lisbon and the University of Granada. His research focuses on the geological mapping of Variscan units, aiming to define tectono-metamorphic units within a sector of the Ossa-Morena Zone of the Iberian Massif (Portugal). Through this work, he investigates the tectonic evolution of the region and the processes that shaped its metamorphic history. His main scientific interests include tectonics, geodynamics, and metamorphic petrology. Alongside his research, Lourenço is actively involved in scientific outreach and contributes to the events team of the TS division ECS team.

Yuto Sasaki

Yuto is a rheologist and PhD candidate at the University of Osaka, Japan. He is a regular editor for the TS division blog. His research is focused on the origin of statistical differences between slow and regular earthquakes, primarily through analogue experiments as well as numerical simulations. The brittle-ductile transition forms the core of his research interests, spanning from dehydration embrittlement to rock viscoelasticity.
