ECS
Welcome to the Climate Early Career Scientists (ECS) community!
We are a team of ECS who love connecting with fellow researchers, organizing events, and building a strong and supportive network. Let’s grow, share, and create impact together! ECS make up a significant part of the EGU membership. We are committed to ensuring that your voice is heard, your contributions are recognized, and your professional network thrives. Our aim is to increase the visibility of ECSs and provide opportunities for networking, collaboration, and growth.
As the ECS team of the Climate (CL) Division, we enjoy organizing events and activities with and for CL-ECSs, both during the EGU General Assembly and throughout the year. Feel free to reach out to any of us with your questions, ideas, feedback—or just for a friendly chat.

Who we are
ECS Representative
Valeria Mascolo
Valeria is a climate scientist and physician who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2025. She holds a PhD in Physics from ENS de Lyon and works as a Research Scientist at the University of Reading. Her research focuses on simulating and forecasting climate tipping points, particularly the Subpolar Gyre and Greenland Ice Sheet. Outside of research, she runs a blog on climate change impacts and enjoys art history, low-carbon traveling, and swimming. Feel free to reach out!
ECS co-Representative
Bianca Biess
Bianca is a geographer and climate scientist who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2025 as a blog editor. She recently earned her PhD from ETH Zurich, where she continues her research as a postdoctoral fellow. Her work explores how spatially compounding hot, wet, and dry extremes will intensify with global warming and their socioeconomic impacts. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, skiing, camping, and traveling. Reach out to share your perspectives on the blog!
Blog Editors
Shalenys Bedoya-Valestt
Shalenys is an oceanographer who has been serving the EGU Climate ECS Team since 2021 (recently as ECS Rep for 2024-2026). She is a last year PhD Candidate in climate sciences at the Climatoc-Lab (CIDE, CSIC-UV-GVA) in Spain. Her research focuses on understanding historical changes in sea breezes in the Mediterranean Basin using observational and simulated data. She is also involved in the EGU Outreach task force and is always happy to collaborate! Find her on LinkedIn, Bsky, and email.
Ayşegül Ceren Moral
Ceren is a PhD student in Atmospheric Sciences who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2025 as a blog editor. Based at Istanbul Technical University, her academic background centers on climate modeling and assessing climate change-related risks. Her work at EGU involves creating content to highlight community experiences and supporting early career scientists. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, traveling, and cross-stitching. If you see her at EGU or during an online event, feel free to say hi!
Campfires Coordinator
Lorenzo Pierini
Lorenzo is a postdoctoral researcher who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2025 as an event organizer and blog contributor. Based at ETH Zurich, he has a background in theoretical physics and now focuses on weather and climate extremes and their impacts. His work bridges fundamental science with the tangible, real-world consequences of climate change on society. He enjoys engaging with an interdisciplinary community to help share relevant science with a broader audience.
Cesar Murad
Cesar is a second-year PhD student who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2026. His research uses remote sensing to explore the spatial patterns and variability of tipping points in global vegetation data across different ecoregions and biomes. Previously, he worked as a Lecturer and Research Assistant for the Geosciences undergraduate program at the University of Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia. He is eager to connect with peers and contribute to the team's ongoing initiatives.
Social-media team
Pierrick Fenies
Pierrick is a paleoceanographer who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2025 as Social Media Coordinator. He earned his PhD from the University of Perpignan in 2023 and currently works as a postdoctoral fellow at National Taiwan University. His research focuses on calibrating proxies to reconstruct past hydroclimate, typhoon activity, and deep ocean changes since the Last Glacial Maximum. If any of these topics resonate with you, feel free to reach out to him!
Edward Forman
Edward is a PhD student who joined the EGU Climate ECS Team in 2026. His current project focuses on reconstructing past climate tipping cascades to better understand their mechanisms and drivers through peat core analysis and imaging flow cytometry. His previous research includes tracking Gulf Stream movements toward the end of the Little Ice Age and developing the CYCLIM tool for palaeoclimate analysis. He looks forward to engaging with the community and sharing scientific insights.
What we do
We are here to support, connect, and amplify the voices of early-career climate scientists! Here is a glimpse of our main activities:
- We bridge the gap between our ECS and the broader EGU. By coordinating with other divisions, we ensure your perspectives are represented within the union and work together to build an inclusive, welcoming environment that actively supports your journey in climate science.
- We organize relaxed online seminars (our Campfires!) giving you a platform to share your work and connect with peers. These sessions offer a friendly space to interact with leading experts, highlight pioneering ECS research, and build your network.
- We manage the Climate division’s blog to make science more accessible and engaging. Our editorial team invites both ECS and established researchers to share their findings, handling the full review and editing process to promote effective science communication.
- We run the community's LinkedIn and Bluesky accounts to keep you engaged and informed year-round. We share the latest news, promote relevant opportunities, and make sure you stay connected before, during, and after the General Assembly.
We are always welcoming new members to our team. If you want to participate, share your ideas, and help shape the CL ECS community, get in touch with us at ecs-cl@egu.eu!
Channels of outreach
- We manage the EGU Climate Division Blog through our dedicated Editorial Team. We publish a wide range of content, including scientific insights, ECS highlights, and interviews. We are always looking for fresh perspectives, so if you have an idea, research, or experience you would like to share, please reach out to us!
- The CL division is active on Bluesky and LinkedIn, and our audience is growing every week. We highly encourage you to engage with us! Feel free to tag our accounts in your posts if there is any research, opportunity, or news you would like to amplify and share with the CL and ECS communities.
- The CL division has a mailing list and an ECS CL mailing list used for communicating and sharing essential information. If you wish to circulate content or announcements via this list, please send your message to ecs-cl@egu.eu. We will review it and forward it to the mailing list coordinator. Please allow a processing window of a few days before your message is distributed to the community.
